I had a marathon 40k session this past weekend and experienced something that kind of threw me off. I’ve played orks a few times and never had this happen, but in one of the games I was getting my dice ready for saves and planning my next turn moves with the ork player calls his waaagh. By call his waaagh, I mean he bellowed this thing at the near top of his lungs, flinging his arms out like he was getting ready to charge himself.

I have to admit, it made me jump.. my first thought being ”crap my models” thinking the table was going to fall. Then seeing this guy flail around while he screamed just kind of made me laugh. Maybe I have been sheltered by mild mannered Ork players but wanted to ask if it is common for Ork players to call their waaagh this way?

Yes, it's common just as it's common for Khorne players to yell, "Blood for the Blood God!"

At the GW event days, I've heard tell of the store managers and/or TOs getting all of the participants to scream Waaagh as loud as they can when someone is declaring it.

I would not be amused...

Well, at least the guy wasn't overly crazy. I could see it getting old quick.

Can't say it helped him either.

Sounds like it was actually a good one then, at least. I always get a chuckle out of the mid-puberty 15 year old letting out the squeakiest little waaagh he possibly can.

Actually, I could do without them either way, but whatever.

Unless a cosplay is in the schedule or there are many young kids, shouting out is not common.
I like people getting into character as the next guy but it adds that extra crazy factor to the hobby when observed by others.
Adults acting this out makes people avoid eye contact and back away.
I like a hobby to be inclusive and yelling tends to not to work so well.

Oddly enough, when playing at a friends place much cursing and yelling DOES happen with creative puns thrown in with the Waagh.

They do. Its really annoying. You're trying to position one model on a wobbly bit of scenery and then "WAAAAAGHH"...

I blame Dan from MiniWarGaming

Every time he called a WAAAGH, he would shout it at the top of his lungs.

And dear God-Emperor, did we love it, did we love to hear that manly WAAAAAGH that would fill our hearts with a desire to hack and slash everything in our path.

I want to one day borrow a friend's Orks to be able to shout a WAAAAGH with meaning at least once

It's a catch-22.

If you shout it at the top of your lungs, people might laugh, or they might just look at you with expressions somewhere between irritation and pity.

If you say it in a normal voice it just sounds weird and wrong.

I should know, I do the latter. I say I'm using a Waaagh just as I would casually mention I'm using any other rule. Never sounds right...

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

I wish I had something to say with my Tyranids, they're not exactly the talkable type.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

I know the feeling. Necrons now have some personality, but I have no idea what an Overlord would say. They don't have a "unified purpose" for a good shout.

You have to decide on the personality of your Overlord.

Might I suggest Napoleon Bonaparte from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure?

That way, you can point at an enemy unit on the table, sniff slightly, and say "Blow zem up."

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

I'm kind of mixed in my opinion on this matter.....

I've seen it done in my local store and well.... part of me applauds them for their enthusiasm and the other half shakes my head that the 40k player stereotypes are somewhat true.

Then again I'm the type that secretly wishes everyone playing 40k was down to earth, sociable, and dressed nicely.

Outer Space, Apparently

ahh, this sounds familiar....

at my local (well, was my local ) before an apocolypse match we would gather the imperium side and the xenos side. imperium must shout "FOR THE EMPEROR" as loud as possible, and xenos must do "WAAAGH!" as loud as possible. loudest side goes first.

lemme just say that most of the club is on a backstreet on beach road, and when we did "WAAAGH!" we did get some people jumping....

I would say that if us ork players just raise our voices a bit its fine, as long as it doesn't frighten anyone or distract people from their game (unless they are tolerant or they want you to be extra fluffy )

I'm now picturing a tasteful "Waagh" done by a classy ork with a walrus mustache and waistcoat.

*Checks his pocketwatch*

*Mustache warbles*

"Hear hear! Waaagh! Waaagh, I say!"

Another ork responds sips tea and responds with, "Indeed, verily!"
