Technically Deathwatch is one word, and they're all the titles of works, so they should be capitalized.

I really don't care about those, but the rouge/rogue thing bugs me

Split between Only War and Rogue Trader myself. Rogue Trader is a fun sandbox with the right GM, Only War is what I've always wanted.

The "best" is different from whatever one I think is my favourite. See I'd say Dark Heresy in a second, but it's not the best. It's the oldest and it has many significant structure problems. Of course, just saying Only War is kinda bias.

So... Black Crusade.

And you're apparently unfamiliar with the concept of capital letters.

My vote goes to "Only War". Its freeform mechanic really applies to me, and the way the rules are set up also make it incredibly easy to convert them towards any of the other settings/themes listed (or coming up with something entirely new).

Plus the vehicle rules are some of the best rules written in the history of rules writing. Even just touching the pages raises your IQ.

Made me think of this

Spoiler:

For me, Dark Heresy, it's simple direct, and bloody combat..not to mention the base which every other game can be aded to it to make a great epic campaign, which I did.

I think we know who wrote what in that book

Personally for me, I think it's Deathwatch, because when I want to play a 40k RPG I want bloody combat that would make Khorne quiver in anticipation of the next offering of skulls I take (though technically black crusade would then work ). I don't want investigative 40k, that gak is for specialist games players and limited edition black library novellas...

Is that enough machismo to defend my opinion? Because honestly, I'd rather just play one of the games really

Uhh! See, I want to agree with you here.

I have two great loves in 40K (besides the armoured legions of the Imperial Guard):

1. The Inquisition (especially the Ordo Xenos and the Deathwatch).
2. The Adeptus Mechanicus (unrelated: everyone go buy The Lathe Worlds... yes I know DH2.0 will invalidate it, but simply owning The Lathe Worlds makes you more attractive to members of both sexes).

... and when the concept of the three 40K RPG's (DH, RT and DW) was first announced Deathwatch was the one I wanted the most. And I really do wish that it was my fav, because by rights it should be, but the game is just too easy. I find DW incredibly frustrating to play and especially to GM (I actually hate GM'ing DW games) because the Marines are just so damned (naturally) powerful, and then Solo/Squad Modes just make them even more powerful. The Horde Mechanic simply does not work (it's a binary system - a horde is either so big that it kills Marines in 1-2 turns, or too small to cause any damage; there's no in between). Now the errata fixed the weapon damage values so that there was a point to bringing something other than a Heavy Bolter, and I've had many great sessions of DW, but I wish it wasn't so damned easy. You have to really work as a GM to make DW fun.

Favorite from a setting standpoint is Rogue Trader. I've always liked the whole "Indiana Jones/old school African safari IN SPACE" types of stories you could do with that setting. Plus there's spaceship rules. any game with spaceship rules automatically makes me like it more (except d20 future, they messed up spaceships big time)

The only one I've personally ran is Dark Heresy, and I never had the patience to spin out a proper investigative arc (I could never be bothered to weave a complex storyline, which is one of my shortcomings as a GM naturally, and the fact I always run it for a one shot type of deal doesn't help). It doesn't do as well as it could in that regard, although I keep feeling like if i actually got the balance right it could be an awesome game in the style of Cthulhu (which i absolutely hate as a system but love as a setting), except they actually had big enough guns to survive (if they didn't do something stupid).
