I happened across an old metal sculpt of Cypher and am going to convert him into a librarian .
I have already started mocking him up ( pics will be added when camera charged ) and would like advice on a few things.
1. I have him holding a book like alot of pics of libbys I've seen , but unlike many I have it open towards him as if he's reading from it . Is this a problem ?
2. Can a hooded robe be his physcic hood ?
3. My sons chapter is quartered red and blue ( ala brazen claws ) with maroon robing . My final question is do libbys have to be all blue if not apart from the horned skull how would I distinguish him as a librarian but still tye him into the chapter.?
Please?

2. The DV Librarian model as a hood and this artwork has it too. So no problem with that. What you could do if you want to make it more clear is add some cables runing into the back of his hood - like in the artwork.
3. The blue armor differs from chapter to chapter. Some do it, some only have parts of their armor blue (like a shoulder guard) and some don't bother with stuff like that. If the model is identifiable as a librarian without beeing blue then paint him whatever color you like.

I thought the book may be wrong as most of the minis if seen have the book facing out in the " have you read this !!! " pose rather than the " reading out loud " pose.
That cable suggestion is a winner.
As for the adivice on colour , very interesting and informative, cheers.
both the DV Libby, and the one in the above picture, both have the armoured Psychic Hood above the robe hood...
using Cypher, the mini won't have one...
they are quite easy to make using a spare shoulder pad, though...
Colour wise, a Librarian doesnt have to be blue, blue is traditional as per the codex. But there are librarians that have the main armies colours with just a blue pad or a small area being the blue and having the horned skull to signify being part of the Librarius.
I would say a hood alone cant signify a psychic hood, they always have a really high collar that arches up over their head, with some cables and stuff going into their head. Grey knight armour has them.
The book.. its a matter of taste, many just have a closed book or just a symbol of a book.
Its not necessarily like a book of spells... In the Dark Angels its a list of fallen angels and their librarians job is slightly different to most chapters in that they spend time psychically seeking locations of fallen.
'Ain't nothing crazy about me but my brain. Right brain? Riight! No not you right brain! Right left brain? Right!... Okay then lets do this!!
From everything I'm aware of, A librarian is in blue power armor, with his chapter colours on his pauldron. The cloak can be whatever colour suits the chapter

This is what the codex astartes dictates as far as i'm aware. So you are right. But not all chapters follow that. Rune priests(= space wolves librarians) aren't blue. Mephiston also is a librarian and not blue. Those are exceptions but they allow you to do the same.
You have committed a heresy to Cypher!!!!
All kidding aside, a few more details and it will be awesome!
<<edit>> Some extra fiddly bits on the backpack may give a nod of the head to the psychic hood.
BTW do not "mock" Cypher, he is a gunslinger after all.

I made a Librarian based on this picture. He looks fairly close to it, I need to finish it though.

I like the plan for your color scheme. The problem with making librarians the same color as the rest of the army is they are a bit harder to distinguish at a glance, so a blue contrasts well(especially against a red/navy split army color scheme.
As others have said, you can certainly deviate as some chapters do if you do change your mind(but again, I like your current plan personally, but it's not my model).
I don't think using a normal cloth hood as a psychic hood will be an issue. As a comparison, every Marine comes with grenades and a bolt pistol , but as they get this gear just for turning up, I doubt anyone would argue you can't use them if the model doesn't have them on its belt.
However, that begs the question of "why don't you just use a normal Marine as a Librarian?" Fortunately I can easily tell what he's meant to be from the staff and book. His other gear shows what he's meant to be without having to worry about whether his psychic hood looks official enough.
As another comparison:
Spoiler:
Here's my Librarian. Yes, I know he looks pretty techy but that fits with the rest of my character models. As he's converted from a resin model I couldn't add the hood conversion I wanted to because it would mean cutting up and potentially damaging the main part of the model to fit it on. So I just used the high collar off a WHFB Wizard to represent his "hood" and if anyone asks I'll just say the devices on his backpack are some sort of psychic focusing device (just imagine the dish blasting out psychic power like a prism tank from Red Alert 2), or maybe it's some kind of "lightweight" version of a psychic hood that was built thousands of years ago. But with any luck the bright blue glowing sword and massive amount of parchment on him will be enough to represent him as a Librarian.
I am planning to experiment with running a cable from his head to the "hood," but if that doesn't look good I won't do it. I'm happy with how the model looks now and I won't spoil it.

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.
That looks fething amazing mate. Love the osl. Thank you for your input .
I toyed with painting the helmet on the hood as if sewn in but it looked gak!
I too am thinking of running cables into the hood but haven't as yet.
I must stress my son and I don't yet game but I'm in the process of putting two army's together for us, him SM and me Orks. Therefore I'm conscious of making my minis game legal for when the time comes, so the knowledge from you guys is great keep it coming.
I like it CW, as for the colour. It's up to you. If you want a none codex chapter then paint him any colour you want. If its a codex compliant chapter then paint him blue with chapter coloured panels.

Second, even if you're using the "Standard" Space Marine book, if you're doing your own Chapter it doesn't have to follow the "blue armour" rule. There are plenty of Chapters that follow the Codex rules for the most part but do their own thing in a few areas.
If you're doing an existing Chapter it'd be worth checking if you want to be 100% background-accurate, but if you're making your own you can go with any scheme you like.

Yeah the chapter is my sons own called ' Wings of Pegasus ' ( other minis in my gallery if interested ) great to know we can do that.
As for the book im guessing its from an inquisitor as it had a bare hand holding it , it was in a pile of bits i found.
Ive just finished painting him up and will post pics tonight hopefully.

Yeah tbh the pose niggles me too. I wanted him to look like he had stepped out onto a high precipice to address his audience. I will probably raise the back of the slate so it and he stands more vertically.
So glad you like him , for a quick conversion/paint job I'm rather pleased with him myself
