Just want to know if any one has tried you make an oil wash with Turpentine and if the Turpentine ate through the Vallejo Gloss Varnish at all? I used a spray can gloss coat, I believe it was enamel and the oil wash ate straight through it and the paint, I think that the Turps is way to strong for my purpose so I ordered some artist grade paint thinner. Automatically Appended Next Post: Does anyone think that Turpentine would eat through the Vallejo Gloss Varnish ? Please I want to oil wash but am afraid that I will destroy my paint job

enamel is different ... I think the vallejo gloss is acrylic based, so shouldn't have the same problem.
best advice I can give is to get some scraps of sprue and test it...
...also try white spirit from an art store for the best stuff, Its awful stuff so go lightly on it and try and use it out of doors, but it doesn't eat through the varnishes I use, when I'm using oils.
hope that helps

I've used straight turpentine over a layer Vallejo's brush-on gloss, specifically for an experiment with oil washes. The varnish, even just that single coat, appears to have held up just fine - as there wasn't a single disturbance to the underlying paint.

Could this be true? Was it a brushed on layer or did you spray the varnish ? I sprayed mine so the varnish layer may not be as durable

Vallejo Game Varnish, gloss varnish, #72072. Brushed on a single layer, by hand, ever so slightly diluted with water. Was left overnight, so it had a decent amount of time to cure before any solvents touched it, which may make a difference. Unless my thinner was something else entirely, decanted into a container labeled "turpentine" without my knowledge (and while maintaining its characteristic odor), it's true.

Well it did end up eating through the gloss coat a little bit, but for the most part it worked well taking a fair amount of exposure to the turps before it ate through
