Hi Dakka,

Question came up in a game yesterday and I think we ended up playing it wrong.

Heldrake with flamer (actually, 3 of them) flamed a unit of my Heavy Destroyers (3+) which happened to have a Destroyer Lord (2+) at the time. I had placed the Destroyer Lord to be closest model to 2 of the Heldrakes, but when the flamer template was placed it didn't actually hit the DestroLord because of the torrent rule. Unit was in cover, but heldrakes had LOS to all models in the unit.

The question was - for the 2 Heldrakes where the DestroLord was closest to the heldrake model do all the wounds generated allocate to closest model to the firing unit (ie the Heldrake) OR is it the closest model to the small end of the template (where because of the torrent rule the template came from the side).

We played it that it came from the small end of the template, but I think that was wrong. BRB would indicate that it was from the firing unit.

Were we wrong?

Unless the rule states otherwise, models are always removed closest to the shooter first. The template positioning only determines the number of hits in your case. The Lord would make the saves.

As it is a shooting attack you allocate from the model not from the small end.

Thanks, I thought so. We were confusing it with wound allocation from a blast/large blast where the wound allocation comes from the centre.

Most blast weapons are allocated from the shooter as well.

You're thinking of barrage weapons. Those are the only ones where you allocate from the center of the blast marker.

Incorrect, only for BARRAGE is this true. Normal blast weapons follow the normal allocation rules

Do keep in mind that all Template weapons have the ignore cover special rule as well, I only bring this up as you mention the cover in the scenario as if it was a factor to consider.

Thanks all, I did remember the ignores cover bit (unfortunately!)

This also came up with my Daemons/CSM vs Eldar yesterday. But it is closest to the firer that takes the first wounds, which helped a bunch.....the Concealed Jetbikers were screwed! The Farseer couldn't use his awesome invul save against my Heldrake. I might have to get another one now

Back in 3rd edition, casualties from a blast or template weapon were always removed under the marker/template. But not since then.
