so im just getting into 40k and im trying to get a decent beginners list going here's what im thinking

HQ:
Belial- sword of silence

troops:
Death wing terminators - assault cannon and chain fist

Death wing terminators- assault cannon and chain fist

Scout squad- camo cloaks and sniper rifles

elite:
Dreadnaught- 2x twin linked assault cannon

Dreadnaught- 2x twin linked assault cannon

this gives me 10 points left for whatever. the idea is that the scout sqauds will be back field objective holders and the dreadnaughts will bring some long range fire from the back while the deathwing do what they do. please give feed back id like to know what i can improve on and maybe any tips and tricks for someone just starting out thank you

Dreads can't have 2x assualt cannons...

You need a plasma cannon somewhere.

I would say this is very far from a beginner's list. Deathwing is tricky to use in the current meta anyhow (I lost half of a 645pt squad of 10 to 108 pts worth of Fire Warriors because I dropped in too close).

It does look like a less expensive list because 1/2 of your points come from Dark Vengeance, but that doesn't mean beginner. Granted, 10 termies in a 1k list with a couple of dreads does sound like it may hold up pretty well. As far as getting plasma, if you proxy that assault cannon and drop the chainfist (you probably won't need the chainfist if you're slogging) you'll actually have points left over for other stuff. Plasma's a much safer bet on a termie than anything as they get a much better save against get hot and can still move and shoot a plascannon normally.

Also, consider the fact that you could be running after up to 5 objectives. Spread your troops too thin with chasing down theirs and you could lose just on the basis that you don't have anything to grab an objective with.

I played the crusade a couple days ago and got stomped because I was running my terminators around without a solid objective-grabbing unit (and he used those new turrets and was plating my models every turn).

Those autocannons are good Str7, but lacking AP to give you a bonus on the damage table. Also, you have 4 TL S7 shots to use. In a 1k game, that could really hurt.

Thanks for the input . What if I changed my assault cannons to cyclone missle launchers ? Would that be better or are plasma cannons still the better choice?

If I were you, I'd look to replacing one dread with a Verenable with PC/PF.
