As a C:SM, I still field and enjoy mine. As a DA player, you have slightly different options, so YMMV.

They are viable, but may not be competitive. From a mechanics standpoint, I think attack bikes might be better for melta delivery. I enjoy Typhoons, you get then for less points, but unless you have good armor saturation, they might just eat a missile and die early. There are a lot of variables.

They are what they always were. Fast, fragile, weapons platforms. Are they the best use of the points you spend on them? Depends on your local meta and the rest of your army. Unless you are playing at the top competitive levels, you can generally include one or two units that are a little sub-par, just because you want them. The dice gods are going to have more impact then tweaking the last 1% of efficiency out of your list. So you might as well run with what you think is cool.

I actually like typhoons better than the regular variety. 48" range and mass maneuverability gives them some degree of survivalbility by outranging many foes.

They are better than you might think. Don't be put off by the two hull points. I try to deep strike them to pick off an isolated unit rather than hurl them into enemy territory, then they can advance during the rest of the game while the rest of my army is the more pressing threat.

I use a lot of Drop Pods so my other units are usually doing their thing while the Speeders advance. Don't feel you have to have them melting tanks on the same turn they arrive, they can still do their job if you put them a little further out and make use of their speed and manoeuvrability to get them where they need to be.

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

I use 3 Variant of my land speeder:

The gun platform with two heavy bolter, get two or 3 of theses and it will eat throught almost anything.

Long range support with the typhoon lauchers: Like Fezman said, great for hanging back and blasthing both tank and troop while staying safe and getting good fire possition.

Finaly the Kamikazy with two multi-Melta: more for those friendly game but: turbo-boost to a hiden spot on the other side of the map and then on turn 2, you opponent will start saying good bye to all of his vehicule

I only field typhoons in a squad of 3 with HB's. Deploy em in area terrain for some added protection and outrange alot of opponents. Last game I played against my friend with his necrons, they wiped out his destroyer lord and 3 wraiths in one round of fire. It was some serious luck from the dice gods of course but there's nothing like being able to insta-kill wraiths before they even think about getting into your deployment zone in my opinion. He couldn't speak for about 30 seconds and just stared at the dice he rolled. I politely gave him his moment of silence...haha.

I run Land Speeders in my White Scars to good effect still. I do run them as a pseudo-suicide squad to take out hordes though (4x Heavy Flamer).

I use them with my DAs, and like them in moderation. They're able to get deep into your opponent's backfield while they're focused on other threats - and if they take the time to take out your speeders, usually all the better - that means they're not focused on another present threat.

What you can't do is run them downfield before you're otherwise threatening your opponent, or they'll be toast, fast. As mentioned, they're fragile.

For Ravenwing, attack bikes are better for melta delivery.

Speeders can also do HB fire pretty well for the points, however ravenwing often run dakka banner, so anti infantry firepower is often not needed.

I find the best use for speeders is with HB/CML, for DA they are 15 pts cheaper than the current SM codex and give your otherwise short range ravenwing the ability to hit out at range, or to pop transports/light vehicles from a safe distance.

If you are not short on FA slots(Which IMO besides black knights (Obviously additional ones to your command squad) you shouldn't be), then maybe keep an eye on the new forgeworld Javelin speeder. The rules havent been finalized yet, but as it stands its the same points as a HB/CML speeder, but with 11 front and side armour, as well as twin-linked on the missiles.

I will be considering them for my army if they remain as awesome as they are now.
