It’s easy to find or make modular gaming boards and tiles, but difficult to find proper gaming tables. GW won’t say who makes theirs, and GeekChic is rather pricey.

Unfortunately, this IndieGoGo campaign didn’t succeed: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/modular-gaming-table and the creator has stated that he will not pursue the venture any further.

However, on his blog: http://realmsofminiatures.blogspot.nl/ he links to a product designed for children that may be perfect for wargamers. http://www.toysrus.com/buy/outdoor-play/kids-outdoor-furniture/connect-2-play-48-x-48-inch-modular-activity-table-c2p4x400x-3994320

As it’s designed for children, it is too short to be used out of the box, but I imagine one could easily extend the legs to a proper height. Or, if you bought two, you could stack them for a 42″ table. Judging from the pictures, it comes with accessories such as cup holders for beer and trays for dice and minis and things. And if you have kids, apparently it’s pretty good for its intended use, as well. There’s also a package with just 2 squares, so you’re looking at $120 USD + S&H for a 6×4 foot gaming table. Double that if you want to go the stacking route.

Actually, a friend of mine just had a brilliant idea. Buy 2 and stack them! Then you've got a lower table for storing stuff or playing other games.

Depending on what the legs are made of, could just be a simple matter of drilling a hole into the bottom of the leg and into a wooden post, and then just "pinning" the two together. I guess the real question is how rugged are the table squares?

I do believe GW makes their battle boards...

and for this to be workable, you'd have to buy 2, so there is $150 invested. Then how are you going to make this tall and secure enough for adult gamers? there's another probably $50-75 in materials. Neat idea, but a lot of labor to make it feasible.

It appears to be high density polyethylene. and more than likely hollow.
would be a cool idea to try and build one in wood. though my wood working skills are 0. :(

Edit: actually if it is hollow, you could just cut the bottom of the legs off, add in a post and drill through to secure. but still labor intensive.

GW boards don't come with legs, so you'd need a table you could collapse enough to fit in your car, which can also be expensive to find one the right size.

They say each square can hold 100 pounds, which should be plenty for a gaming board, right?

That does look pretty cool.. too bad the legs are so short. Looking at the pics it doesn't look like it would be too tough to make something similar and kickstart it. Would probably be pretty pricey though to get all the plastic molds done though.

You could use tatami cushions to play on bended knees. Though I'm sure it's not the flexible part of our ailing bodies anymore.

I just had home depot cut a 4' X 8' plywood sheet in half for me, used piano hinges in the middle and prop it up on metal easels. The whole project cost me about 60$, and I sewed sleeves out of cheap fabric so I have different background colours. Each sleeve uses about 10$ of fabric.

That definitely looks like it'd be too much work to get right.

I built this in an afternoon based loosely on some plans a friend had given me

A friend then asked me to build him a 6x12 table. He ordered $150 of wood delivered to his door, and in about 4 hours we knocked it out (looks similar to this, except without the shelf)

Since this table is designed for disassembly and modular reassembly, looks like you could cut about half off the existing 21" legs put some soft, no-scratch pads on the bottoms and then stand it on an existing kitchen or dining room table. This would allow space underneath for drinks etc and still retain the modularity/portability with minimal labor.

This looks like the perfect table for skirmish-level gaming. Some people are missing part of the benefit of the height...you can play it while sitting on the couch or a gaming chair! It's like a modular coffee table that can be put away after gaming.

It would be perfect for me, as the only thing I have to game on in my living room without getting out my homemade collapsible gaming tables is a plush-topped ottoman, which nothing really sits very evenly on, and is too small for anything but smaller-footprint boardgames. And the tables I made are full height tables, so they are at your chest height or slightly higher if you are sitting on the couch.

Price point sicks, though. $50 and I could convince the wife a whole lot easier.

That's a good idea, but the reason I've been wanting something like is because I want an entire, independent table that is modular and transportable in my car. If there is already a table large enough for me to put this on, then I don't need this one. I could cut the bottoms of the legs off, as you suggested, and use some cheap Ikea table legs if I could find some that would fit. The question then would be "Do I need to support each leg, or can I just do the 4 corners and maybe 2 in the center?" Also, the cutting would need to be flawless to ensure evenness.

That's very impressive! Unfortunately, something like that is too large and permanent for my apartment.

I can't find the damn thing on Wally Worlds website, but my wife picked up 3 20" x 40" tables that have height adjustable legs, fold in half, and have a carry strap.

Easy enough to slap together in different configurations to game on with just about anything then fold up and hide away somewhere.

Thanks. The 6x4 one (pictured) is built to be disassembled (via long screws) for transport. I already moved it from one home to another. It also easily fits an 8x4 over top without any trouble. The 12x6 isn't going anywhere

I agree it would be pretty big and bulky for an apartment though.

I've got some more plans I'm hoping to try out, as as I have plenty of room in my basement.

I think it'd be kinda cool to game from my video game rocker. Sure beats the floor, like in my old Battlemasters and 2nd edition 40K days, where I had to be deathly afraid of the dog breaking the models.

For the price of two of those Toys-R-Us tables and supplies you could afford this:

Super sturdy and heavy duty, strong enough for me to walk on, able to use it as a work bunch when not gaming, and you can make it as big as you need it (I went 8 by 4).

But the number 1 issue is that they may not have the space.

being able to deconstruct one is nice.

Ok I'll chip in with my plan. I've just made a gaming table top, using a thin 4x 6 MDF sheet and then cutting it into 2.

Then I intend to use two of these: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-6-Foot-Long-Center-Fold-Table-Multiple-Colors/13269097

These tables are fairly cheap, you can often get them for less $60, and appear sturdy enough. Using 2 side by side would give you a 6 x 5 playing space that can be easily packed away or transported.

In total my table and board will only cost me around $130.

Ziterdes, a German manufactures, produces modular gaming boards at a very reasonable price of 28€ per piece. They come pre-painted in basic colors and are made of solid plastic, can be easily combined and are light to carry.

You could do it like I did.

1. Have a local FLGS ask you to paint up thier Realms of Battle Board.

2. Present multiple ideas of varying level of detail with itemized materials list. Owner select list and tells you he will have your materials "next week".

3. "Next week" turns into 8 months, at which owner goes out of business and moves out of state.

4. Have your own Realms of Battle board.

They don't sell the Tables on the UK ToysRUs sites, otherwise I'd have considered this, I wouldn't mind the lowered height as we could just play on chairs etc.

But do they have legs, or are they just like a realm of battle board? The problem is there are so many options for buying/making modular boards/terrain, but they're not actual tables. Although, now that I've thought about it, as long as the boards interlock/magnetize/stick together, I guess you could just put a table leg on the bottom of each one for pretty cheap and you've got a table.
