I'm after a bit of help please, I'm a SM player and I've a few games coming up at the 1000pt value, thia could ans will be against evwrything from Tau to Dark Eldar to other SM. What should I be thinking about for a well rounded army that cannot change from game to game?

I'm fairly new to this to still getting my head around the units and capabilities so often over look things.

My favoured tactics so far are ranged shooting.

Any help for a confused mind would be very welcome.

I would love to hear more experienced peoples thoughts on this, as i'm pretty new myself, but if you like shooting, a tactical squad and scout sniper squad should be your first choice for troops, back them up with missile heavy devastators as they cover a lot of bases.

also some heavy fire platforms in the form of predators (auto cannon and las sponsons is a good all rounder) or maybe dreadnoughts.

I dont get to play as much as i would like, so someone else can pronbably confirm if i'm along the right lines and probably give you some more pointers.

THUNDERFIRE CANNON!

T7 piece of artillery and a techmarine dirt cheap.

Good range, ignores cover, 4 plates of doom, great vs non meq troops.

Plus with the techmarine you get to upgrade the cover save of a ruin.

Just got mine and it is awesome!

I was thinking along the lines of:

Libby
Couple tac squads with rhinos
Scout snipers
Dreadnought with TLLC
Dev squad all with ML
Thunderfire Cannon (or 2 whirlwinds if I drop the Rhinos)

My problem with the list is the Libby, whats he really doing and he can't fit in either rhino?

I'd go for a libby, 2 full Marine squads in Rhinos, a Dev squad with 4x missile launchers, and a TFC as a base. That puts you right around 780-800 points depending on how you kit the tactical squads. I'd go missile launcher/melta gun for maximum flexibility. That lets you combat squad the tac squads, giving you six missiles a turn at range to deal with armor in addition to the two meltas for AP2. The libby can join a tactical squad or the devestators depending on powers. For the remaining points, I'd probably invest in a storm talon for general support and a full attack bike squadron with heavy bolters for additional anti-infantry punch. The bikes give you a mobile contesting option and are very durable at a 1000 points and can also pump out 15 shots a turn in rapid fire range.

The thunder fire is in!

Just the Libby giving me issues, I usually add them into a squad but 11 people won't fit into a rhino, do I combat squad and lose the heavy weapons? Or add him to the Dev squad? What powers would work with a long range unit?

The talon does exactly that. It gets protection from non-skyfire and gives you some anti-air capability.

You combat squad, but don't lose the heavy. Buy ten marines, split into two five man squads. The special weapon + 4 marines + the libby go into the rhino. The other 4 + the missile launcher go onto a home field objective to provide long range fire support.

Since regular SM can't get divination, I'd use telepathy or just the base codex powers. Nullzone + Avenger is still a beastly combo.

I had no idea you could combat squad and keep the special weapons, duh!

The list I had left me 5 points so I could swap a rhino for a razorback in this scenario and bring in an extra heavy weapon.

The are going to stay off this one, not a big fan of the bikes so going to convert them into quads, don't quite have he time for that.

I am a bit of a jackass as you will see (well, "a bit" is an understatement), but I would bet on 1,000 point lists not having enough to deal with av 14 so with that said:
1. Librarian- 100pts.
2.10 man tactical squad w/flamer- 180pts.
3. 10 man tactical squad w/flamer- 180pts.
4. 5 man sniper scout squad w/ML and cloaks- 90 pts. (points were off)
instead:
4. Give both tac squads Plasma cannons, give a sergeant a combi weapon, and both LRs storm bolters.
5. Land raider redeemer w/MM- 250 pts.
6. Land raider redeemer w/MM- 250pts.

I would give the liby Avenger and Vortex of doom and put him with a 10 man tac squad. I would give both the ten mad tac squads a flamer (M.launcher otional), put them in the redeemer and march them up the field.
I would prop the sniper scouts mid field and provide fire support (no pun intended) for the redeemers (points were off)
as the redeemers flamestorm the hell out of everything or fire their assault cannons having them fire their defensive storm bolters, have the squads disembark in rapid fire distance, use the liby's vortex if I am feeling lucky or the avenger as the flamer tac marines light guys up, next turn unleash those plasma !

Never tried this, I need to get some flamestorm cannons and assault cannons to convert my goddhammers. I think this would be both incredibly fun and incredibly douchy.

Should do decent against everything incredibly paranoid opponents who could foresee this.

Edit: God help you if you meet a necron player with this list though

That list makes me.do an evil laugh! I doubt much could handle them and no necrons at my club!

It is a little over points though so the scout would have to be dropped.

glad you like it. Sorry about my points being off, my brain registered "90" as being "40" don't ask me why haha. But with the extra 40 points you could:
1. Give both squads plasma cannons (5 pts each)
2. Give both LRs storm bolters (10pts each)
And
3. Give a sergeant a combi weapon.

Have fun getting your models smashed to bits by frustrated opponents!

I do like that, as I'm buying either a thunderfire and stormtalon or 2 landraiders I'm waiting to see of flyers are allowed in these games!
