I was bored at work today and though of a fun way to use that super heavy, apocalypse unit in a different way.

Player 1 gets 1 apocalypse super heavy of their choice (baneblade, lord of skulls, etc.)

Player 2 gets to make a regular 40K list, with no FOC restrictions, with their own army of equal points value to player one's model.

Using a standard 4 X 6 table, with terrain placed, player 1 positions his super heavy at one of the short ends of the table.

Player 2 then deploys his army as he sees fit.

No need to roll to see who goes first, player 1 always goes first.

The object of the game is for player 1 to reach the opposite table edge and back to it's original table edge with out being destroyed, player two's obvious objective is to destroy the super heavy.

I think this would be a fun way to use those HUGE models instead of playing a regular game of apocalypse.

You could even team up with 2 players controlling a super heavy each and the other team teaming up to take them out!

Give it a try and post a battle report here.

It is the 3rd Millennium. For more than a hundred months Games Workshop has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Nottingham. It is the foremost of wargames by the will of the neckbeards, and master of a million tabletops by the might of their inexhaustible wallets. It is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with business strategies from the early Industrial Revolution Age. It is the Carrion Lord of the wargaming scene for whom a thousand veteran players are sacrificed every day, so that it may never truly die. Yet even in its deathless state, GW continues its eternal vigilance. Mighty battleforce starter-sets cross the online-store-infested miasma of the internet, the only route between distant countries, their way lit by a draconian retail trade-agreement, the legal manifestation of the GW's will. Vast armies of lawyers give battle in GW's name on uncounted websites. Greatest amongst its soldiers are the Guardians of the IP, the Legal Team, bio-engineered super-donkey-caves. Their comrades in arms are legion: the writing team and countless untested rulebooks, the ever vigilant redshirts, and the writers of White Dwarf, to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from other games, their own incompetence, Based Chinaman - and worse. To support Games Workshop in such times is to spend untold billions. It is to support the cruelest and most dickish company imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of sales discounts and Warhammer Fantasy Battle, for so much has been dropped, never to be re-published again. Forget the promise of cheaper digital content and caring about the fanbase, for in the GW HQ there is only profit-seeking, Space Marines and Sigmarines. There is no fun amongst the hobby shops, only an eternity of raging and spending, and the laughter of former employees who left GW to join better companies.

This sounds awesome.:.if my local gamestore didn't already do it. It gives me a way to use my Dark Age Warlord Titan other than 6000 point apocalypse games.

Finally found my quote from a gym buddy born and raised in South Korea:
"It is the soldier, not the reporter who has given us the freedom of the press.
"It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech.
"It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate.
"It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag."

Wasn't this mission in a White Dwarf? Only it was centered around a Stompa and not just any Super-Heavy.

That'd certainly be interesting. I may have to suggest it to my group.

This sounds boring as hell. The superheavy has to move 130" (depending on how long it is) at the rate of 6" per turn. So there's pretty much no chance that the game will ever end with the tanks successfully making the trip, one side will always be killed long before that happens (especially since you're talking about a 500 point army). And TBH it's always going to be resolved in the first turn when the drop pod melta either kills the superheavy and wins or fails to kill it and loses.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

I think it would take some ironing out. As peregrine noted most super heavy vehicles would take 24 turns to manage to move that distance. This would also be resolved fairly quickly if the army side brings any form of serious melta.

Perhaps don't allow reserves/DS and only make the super heavy move to a relic in the center of the board and then off the board. That sounds more fun in my estimate and could be a great diversion from rule book missions.

Meh. Either the enemy list easily counters the Super Heavy, or the Super Heavy blows them off the board. It also heavily depends on the heavy, a Warhound for example will demolish everything in its path without destroyer weapons or deep striking meltas to counter it, but the more support-role Stompa will struggle against any long range squads in cover and especially against vehicles.

Why would you need to make a return trip? What would be the purpose of such a mission? To move one place and come back? The mission should be modelled as a 'breakthrough'.

The super heavy needs to get across the board, either to escape enemy territory or to reinforce friendlies in some other part of the battlefield. The super heavy player should get a super heave + 1000 points, the attack should get the same amount of points. This way the super heavy player has some bubble wrap. It should lead to a more dynamic game.

Sounds like Ogre, basically. Could be fun, I'm just wary of any game type where 90% of my infantry's weaponry isn't going to do anything.

I was a master at defeating the "6 Tower Defense" in Ogre, and bought my first Armorcast Baneblade so I could play 40k scale Ogre back in the day. As such, I'd recommend the Superheavy's goal is to contest one objective on the opposite side of the board for one turn. The defender must retain control of the objective at all times, or loses after one full turn not in control of that objective. Within those constraints, players can feel free to set their own point limits and unit restrictions.

Id figure a bane blade or super heavy would have at least a support convoy with it.

defending super should have some units as well (maybe only troops) as it would be all too easy to have a ton of troops with melta bombs bumb rush the thing and close combat it every turn.

the problem here is that every army can bring things that guarantee that superheavy dies. as an ork i can bring PK-bikers, and turn-1 assault him. most other armies will bring melta. one tank, however big, will never stand up to a tailored list.

if the defenders had less points to play with, this could work, also (to speed things up) if the defenders were emplaced, so can't move or assault, it could work with most armies (not nids or orks though) and speed it up a lot; superheavy moves and shoots, defenders shoot, next turn.

i could see a superheavy drag race working, forcing them to move as fast as they can forwards and shoot all their guns that can fire sideways at each other. the player that reaches the end with the least damage wins?
