anyone know of a good mordheim like fantasy skirmish game?
id like something that you can advance your team in and isnt too complicated.
i know it sounds like mordheim is ideal but i'd like to keep it to something new and current.

There's no such thing as "new and current" in miniature/tabletop games. This isn't like a video game, where you have to deal with outdated graphics or lack of online support. If Mordheim does work for you, there's no reason to not use it (assuming you can find a copy of the rules).
That doesn't mean that there may not be something better out there (I'm not familiar enough to comment) but simply being old does not make the system bad.
That said, you might want to just consider D&D 4th Edition. It's so miniatures-centric these days, and the character-building has become extremely simplified that it should work for a campaign-centered skirmish game.

Song of Blade and Heroes might be something you're looking for, but 8ball is right, if Mordheim is what you want, then play that, just use newer miniatures .

Would definitely agree with this - just reading the rules for Song of Blades and Heroes now and it's a really cool game! New rules that you can get free updates for, and a tremendous amount of expandability.

Cutlass! by Black Scorpion (more specifically, by Gav Thorpe), is pretty cool. It's a pirate fantasy skirmish game so it may not be exactly what you're after ... but then looking at your avatar, yo ho ho. The Black Scorpion site is a bit wonky at the mo, however, so be patient.
And here's a review:

I always felt like Malifaux was the spiritual successor to Mordheim, updated as a more complex game...
edit: re-read OP, Malifaux is pretty complicated, though it does now have a way of advancing your crew through a linked campaign.

Malifaux is still complicated, but the Campaign rules listed in Wyrd Chronicles 5 have linked campaign rules.

It's not a bad complicated. The game is decently tricky, but once you've played a few games you start to get the hang of it. But they're going through a rules change, so that might get tossed out the window for all I know

Haha totally agree, they have some of the cheesiest art ever and I always have to tell friends "Just TRY the game first without even looking at it" to get them interested.
If campaigns are your kind of thing I'd recommend the main rulebook but also the Song of Deeds and Glory expansion PDF that details campaign rules.
Always nice when you can use whatever miniatures you want!

Goalsystem Delves is a miniature wargame with RPGish elements where your guys get stronger after missions and gain experience and whatnot. Review: http://deltavector.blogspot.ca/2012/12/goalsystem-delves-rules-review-generic.html

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |

I'd also recommend Song of Blades and Heroes. We're in the midst of a SBH campaign right now (see the blog in my sig) and we're having a great time. Nothing quite like a game that lets you stat up a profile for any fantasy miniature you can think of.
The art is cheezy, but that's intentional as it's supposed to look like old 80's RPG drawings. It's a great set of rules that's been refined over the last 4 editions (each offered as free updates to those who own a previous edition!). It's less complicated that Mordheim, but the activation mechanic is very engaging, and it has great replay value. We've been playing it off and on for the last 3 years.

I heard this and tried using the contact form on Ganesha games to get the latest core rules since I bought the SBH rulebook a while back, but I never hear back. Are you using a different channel for getting the updates?

If you got it off drivethrurpg/ whichever site, don't they simply update the version on there?

I got mmy most recent via WargamesVault (same as DrivethruRPG) and it automatically updates there. Just log in.
If you ordered it strait from Ganesha I'd try the contact again or contact him via the Song of Blades Yahoo group. I updated a game taht way a year or so ago and he was very helpful.

In hindsight I should have bought it off DriveThruRPG, but instead I went through the main site. Maybe I'll try the Yahoo group since I feel like the "Contact Us" on Ganesha Games just goes to some intern instead of the actual developer.

AFAIK, Ganesha is a one man show run out of his (Andrea's) house. Not that it excuses Andrea not getting back to you, but if you don't get a response, it probably got lost in a particularly busy day. Trying again or going via the yahoo group is a good idea.
