Hey all,

Been busy working away at a Stormtalon for my home brew chapter using Blood Raven colours and Blood Angel markings, firstly what do we think? I tried to go fast for this part and ended up at 3 hours.

What I need help with is washing, I've dipped in the past and never painted anything this big, so how do I wash without it ending up dirty and messy looking?

Thanks

Wash as normal, then paint over the panels you want to look clean with the original colour

My problem is I don't know how to wash, I've always army painter dipped and overall gain good result puttingbit on with a brush. Now and again I maybe would get some frosting.

Recently I used the dip on a drop pod (first vehicle) and it wad pretty much ruined whrn spraying the matt, I'm quite scared of it happening again and ruining the stormtalon.

Oil or watercolor washes will solve your problem.

Try doing a wash with thinned Payne's Gray acrylic paint. Considerably cheaper than the various washes out there, and does an incredible job.

Still not washed yet but here's an update.

Too much black? I can still change the black on the ML to red?

Largest colour to add now is cream and then a little metalics, lens, highlight and decals. That then only leaves varnish and the cockpit canopy! Not much really!

I'd give the engines a metallic drybrush, if I were you...

An update to the WIP, what do think so far? Anything to add?

Tonight it's a little touching up, mild weathering, then the dreaded wash! And maybe finish the last few lenses. Then it's highlighting, decals and matting.
Which leaves my question for now, how the heck do I paint the canopy, any tips?

TIA

To paint the canopy, you could try and cut out electrical tape to mask off the glazed bits and then spray a primer onto the remaining visible bits of canopy structure. Apply a bit of silver and wash maybe and you're done.

The electrical tape should come away easily enough without affecting the paint job. You coudl do a similar thing with a masking fluid, but you may not be able to get the same kind of straight lines you can with a tape.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

I had to go against my priming instincts and just paint the frames on the canopy with a fine brush.

Old modeling trick for Model airplane canopies.

The parts that look like the metal support members

You paint them on the inside.

This will give the impression of painted sections while protecting the paint.

DO NOT glue the canopy on until after you have sealed the model as the sealer will cloud the canopy. With the paint on the inside, you wont have to worry about protecting it with sealer.

I hope this helps.

Don't just wash the whole model. Paint the wash into the reccesses(spelled wrong?) using a fine tipped brush. I suggest black wash. If you get the wash on a flat surface, you can use your finger tip to wipe it away before it dries. This if you use the Citidel washes. If you use oil washes it will work too but you should use a good gloss coat(s) then add an oil based wash applied the same way. You will be able to go back and fix up any mistakes easier even after it dries.

What color do you want the canopy to be? Then paint it from the outside. Paint it carefully. If you want to spray it then use tape to section off the glass parts. DO NOT USE ELECTRICAL TAPE! Use a painters tape from a DIY store. I use a brand called Frog. It doesn't leak like the others and is available in different sizes.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice all.

I would like to spray the canopy (I use red primer) to match the rest, but I think thats a little easy to go wrong so will paint very carefully with black primer then red.
