Lamenters.

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.

If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in.

Either do the classic, Ultramarines, or be creative, and do your own.

Everything in-between is a kinda halfassed neither-here-nor-there.

There are several codexes for Space Marines (plain Codex Space Marines, Codex Blood Angels, Codex Space Wolves, etc...). You can use the rules from any one of the codexes to represent your army, while calling your army something else - for example I use Codex Blood Angels to represent my space marine army as I wanted a force heavy on assault marines. However, they are not painted as Blood Angels nor does their fluff say they have anything to do with Blood Angels.

In my case, I made up a chapter and paint scheme and then chose the rules that would best fit what I wanted to do.

You can paint your space marines what ever color you want. You can call your chapter whatever you want. In the 10,000 years since the Horus Heresy, there have been thousands and thousands of Space Marine chapters that were founded over time.

Here is a list of some existing ones. Take a look at their lore and their color schemes and pick one that you really like.

Welcome to the hobby!

I'd say go to your FLGS and see if you can look thru some of the marine codexes. Decide how you want to play as that may have an impact on which book you play out of of. Look in some of the books as there are successor chapters and you may find a paint scheme you like. Most players won't have a problem with an army painted one way playing out of a codex that is different from the paint scheme. Most players are more concerned with the models being wysiwyg as opposed to painted in traditional/correct color schemes. I run a Raven Guard marine army because I love the paint scheme and fluff but have used a Dark Angels codex before with nobody saying a word about it. Welcome to the obsession that is 40k fellow marine player!!!

I say go with what others here are saying. Look up the existing chapters, flip through the various marine books, and then go with what your heartstrings are pulling you towards.

Dark Angels- 7500 pts
Tau- 5000pts
Chaos Daemons- 3000/2000 pts
Dark Eldar(allies)- 1500 pts

Okay, I've got to ask. Recently there have been at least a few new dakka members from china who are all asking for advice on starting a new army without giving very much of anything for us to go on.

Are you all from the same gaming group, or is it just a coincidence?

Deathwatch. I had typed up a very compelling argument for why you should make a deathwatch army, but the internet nommed it. so, I'll just say that it's an elite militant orginization with the ordo xenos of the inquisition, made up of the best of the best space marines pulled from their respective chapters (so, all the options in the poll, and suggested in the thread? you can have them all!) I also pulled some pics off google to really drive home their badassery.
