Browsing through the codex it seems that black Templars really need to get into combat to be useful. But, if I'm reading the vows correctly, they don't get cover saves. Add to this their only assault vehicle is a land raider and it seems like their only tactic is to run across the field relying solely on 3+/6++, which doesn't sound like a very good idea to me.

So, what am I missing? How do they get in the enemy's face?

Black Templars must pick 1 of the 4 vows available.

And they get just as many assault vehicles as and other space marine army.

They are not just limited to Land Raiders.

My bad on the vows, realise they can only take one now

You guys are all talking like it's really easy to just run marines up the field and assault. Wouldn't they just get gunned down?

They're marines. They don't die like guard, ork or nids. They withstand some punishment. But, that being said, you don't run them out in the open either. You cover hop forward, you rhino blitz, you crush them by assaulting with 3 land raider crusaders full of pain. There are many options open to you. It depends on the situation. You gotta try and build a versatile army that can survive any board/any opponent.

You could try the 20man squad with 10 initiates/10 neophytes lead by a Chaplain with 3 servitors.

So everytime you suffer a loss you move d6+3" toward any enemy you want. So the more they shoot you, the closer you get to your target.

Personally I'm a fan of termie chaplain and termie retinue in a crusader, blitzing right up on a big juicy unit and barfing horrible painful melee death on them.

My stratgey for the next BT game I play is going to be a drop pod crusader squad lead by a chaplain and EC. the chaplain wil have a homer and the next round the TH/SS termies will come in. right next to them.

This is my strategy against an upcoming tau opponent at least.

It gets difficult when you don't know what you'll be facing, IE tournaments. Its compounded by the varying terrain. But that kind of army is very focused on getting your chaplain in close where you need him without him scattering into "OMG THERE'S SO MUCH GUNFIRE!!!" range.

well I was planning on having the chaplain in the drop pod with the homer and the marshall coming down in TDA. Would you suggest I swap them and put the Chaplain in TDA and have the marshall in the pod with the homer?

I tend to shy away from Marshals. You can get a close equivalent with a built in 4++ for cheaper in a Chaplain.

Well I need to have somebody carry the homer. Should I just take a basic Castellan with a power weapon in the drop pod with the EC then and have him carry the homer?
Cause I got a decent model for him with a storm shield and a power axe. I went and got the chaplain with power fist finecast, but I do really like the chaplain in TDA model as well.

I just suggest dropping the castellan in favor of a chaplain. Castellans don't have invuln saves standard, chaplain has a 4+ invuln and popping him in termie armor bumps him to 2+4++ Give him the teleport homer and he can stand his own against shooting and such without wasting points on an iron halo.

If you ever buy an Iron Halo you're doing it wrong. A Castellans with Storm Shield is 10 points cheaper than a Reclusiarch but doesn't have a Power Maul.
