Just starting out on 40k and starting off with Space Wolves. Just got my first 500 points painted and ready. I got this from reading all the forums and advice from sitting in on some games at my local hobby stores. So some advice on tweaking this current set and building up to 1500 and 2000 would be appretiated.

HQ:
Rune Priest-Living Lighting and Jaws of the Wolf

Troops:
5 X Greyhunters
5X Greyhunters Mark of the Wolfen
5x Greyhunters Plasma Gun

Heavy Support
5 Long Fangs 1 Squad Leader-2 Heavy Bolters, 1 Lascannon, 1 Missle Launcher and 1 Multi-meta.

I will say, I'm not a huge fan of multi-meltas with Long Fangs or Devastator squads. They have to move in order to get close enough to make the Multi-Melta worth it, and at that point you've wasted a round of shooting. Personally, I'd swap it for another lascannon.

From the looks of it, it seems like you bought a devastator box and 2 space wolf pack boxes, so I'll try to work with what you got currently.

Multimeltas are awful on Longfangs, another lascannon would do better. The rest is okay. Your antitank should be lascannons/missiles and meltaguns on your grey hunters.

Put two of the squads together into a 10 man squad for a free special weapon. At 500 points with mix and matched weapons, longfangs aren't really a cost efficient unit, you'd do much better trading the 5 of them for grey hunters.

You'll eventually want more missile launchers for long fangs and some meltaguns, so I'd advise buying some tactical marine boxes and fluffing them up with leftover bits from the wolf boxes. Wolf tails and knives go far into making regular tacs look wolfy, plus you get a meltagun, plasmagun, and missile launcher in a tac box.

Later you probably will want to get some terminators so you can convert a TDA rune priest and some lone wolves and/or terminator wolf guard.
And more grey hunters...
And tanks...
And drop pods...

Thanks for the advice so far. I pretty much bought the Space Wolves Pack, Devastator Squad and SM Combat Squad.

With that in mind, I'll bump the Multi Meta up to Grey Hunter and change to a Meta gun. I'll also put the two squads together

So it will go like this.

HQ
Rune Priest Living Lightning, Jaws of the Wolf

HS
Long Fangs with Heavy Bolter X2, Missle Launcher and Las Cannon

Troops:
Grey Hunters X10 Plasma Gun, Melta Gun and Wolf Standard

Grey Hutners X6 Mark of the Wulfen

If it's financially viable for you, I'd just buy another box of either tac marines or space wolves(probably the tacs since you get a melta, a plasma AND a missile launcher for your long fangs that way) and run 2 packs of grey hunters in rhinos, one with plas and one with melta(again if it's financially viable) and bench the long fangs until a higher point total and/or you get them better guns(missile launchers). The current weapon setup they have is kind of weak unfortunately, since at 500 points the lascannon probably has no juicy vehicle targets to blow up and the long fangs are rather immobile and nonscoring. They're great at higher points when you have better targets though.

The real crappy part of it is missile launchers are the best weapons on longfangs, but only come one to a box (tactical and devastators only have one per :( )

Something like:

Rune Priest, runic armor, chooser of the slain 130

Grey Hunters x 10 plasma x 2 rhino 195

Grey Hunters x 9 melta x 1, rhino 175

Put the priest in the rhino with the 9 man squad, drive around and shoot living lightning out the top of your rhino if you wanted.

I ebayed a bunch of missile launchers from bits stores and just stuck them on models from the grey hunter kit.

4/5 missile launchers is pretty much the best you can get out of your long fangs, although i've started running 3 missile launchers and 2 heavy bolters (for multishot against dark eldar). i would amost always kit the squad leader with a flamer for 5pts. - great trick as obv his split fire rule normally sees him not firing a weapon anyway - and chances are if your opponent has infiltrators / drop pods etc. chances are they're going to be comign for your long fangs and a template weapon gives you D3 autohits in overwatch.

Grey hunters i find Always run with a wolfstandard and at least 1 flamer (0pts) for exactly the same reason. plus Wolfstandard has many benefits!

Agreed - whack the rune priest in the rhino living lightening the f'k out of everythign from the top hatch - I run at least 2 of this config and they're one of my most dangerous units on the board - no one expects a rhino to be putting out D6 S7 Ap5 hits at unlimited range

You can get the ML's cheap, takes a bit of searching on ebay etc though.

Back in the day, we were epic Space Vikings with horns, and beer, and stupid mockney accents, and we didn't have any truck with this flying around like a pansy shizzle. We certainly didn't surround ourselves with mangy animals.

Now we're basically the Bestiality Chapter.

We also now ride chariots and employ daemonic dreadnoughts...also, we fly and teleport with abandon. With wolves.

Thanks for the advice so far. Just picked up another Space Wolves pack. I'm thinking of putting this into the 1000 point zone. So here is what I'm looking at now.

HQ: Rune Priest; Living Lightning, JoW and Runic Armor

Grey Hunters X10 MotW, HoW, Plasma Gun and Melta

Grey Hunters X10 MotW, HoW, Plasma Gun and Melta

Long Fangs ML, Las X 2 and HB X2

For the left over 5 models, might do a Wolfguard unit with SB, PW and Thunderhammer to cover the Rune Priest

That should add up to close to 1000.

Definitely pick up MLs and PCs on Ebay. 5 of either of those, with Prescience... Very little comes close for raw infantry/heavy infantry shredding power.

i'd pick up a pod and some rhinos to keep your squads getting shot up too
