Im wondering if warshrines are actually useful either as a mount or on their own as I've never played a game of fantasy that wasn't iob and I havent seen them in many lists. How do they fare these days? I just picked up the box yesterday (perhaps foolishly) but I haven't opened it and I have the receipt so I was thinking of trading it in for some skullcrushers. Any general army building or strategic advice is a welcome too as I am new to fantasy (experienced in 40k) but as it stands my woc army consists of 24 warriors, 20 marauders, 10 hounds, 5 knights, 1 chariot and the shrine which I may exchange for skullcrushers. Whats your 2 cents?

My understanding is it's a bound spell which makes it very easy to stop.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

I would say that it is ok, but nothing like as good as other things in the same slot.
As a bound spell, it is easy to dispell. To fully use it, you need 3 Characters or unit champions within 12" of it.
As a mount, you have no Look out sir, so it could work for a Tzeentch unkillable, but doesn't give the manoeuvrability of a disc.

Skullcrushers, on the other hand, are awesome.

Ok, its settled then. I'm exchanging it for skullcrushers on Monday. on a separate note, how are marauder horsemen?

And is a lord on manticore worth it?

Marauder horsemen are great, lord on a Manticore would kill a lot, but is much more vulnerable than just sticking the lord in a unit and taken a chimare instead.

Sorceror on a Chimare, might be pretty good, depending on lore.

RE: first question, as someone that has actually used a warshrine, they are very useful even if you never get the bound spell off simply because 3d6 pick any two is much much better than straight 2d6. With that said, you will probably get more mileage out of the Skullcrushers.

Oh, and I would never put a character on the warshrine; it puts two high-value targets in one, cannonbally, spot. Also, Mark of Tzeentch for all warshrines.

Warshrine works really well in an army built around the warshrine idea.
3 units of 12 chosen, all with a champ, and a small unit or two of other stuff with a unit champ. You'll also need a big scary caster, and death magic works best to give you more dice for the shrine.

Chosen who get WS7, or T5, or A3, or really any upgrade are really good. Chosen who pop out a free daemon prince is awesome (as he shows up with chaos armor and weapons/shield and mark).

It's a fun change from Manticore spam.

If you put the effort into using the war shine you can turn champions and heroes into monsters very quickly.
I have seen a player end up with 3 chaos lords(through number of rolls and stat increases) because of the shrine.
Warshrines are viable they just need a different play style.

Ok, good to now they can be useful but I'm a noob as of late so I think I'm still going to swap it for the more basic stab you in the face skullcrushers LOL.

And that's something warriors of chaos excel at.
Its pretty frightening when their core troops only have less wounds then empire heroes and lords

That fear is usually alleviated a split-second later when one thinks of Demis, Hellblasters and three times the numbers hitting MoN Warriors front and flank on 4's with hatred. :-)

The warshrine is fun. I usually just throw six dice at the bound spell and hope for double 6's.

In one game I ended up with two daemon princes due to the warshrine...

warshrines are very useful, its all down to how you use it as stated above.

I rock one in my list with a mark of Tzeentch, its very difficult for opponents to shift it with a 4+/3+ and it saoks up those canon shots like a sponge. the number of people who have had issues shifting it has been worth the points every time, stat boosts are nothing to snark at either and having one close by while a chalenge is going on is a boon not to be overlooked, let alone the spell, its always handy to have it around fo failed casts/spare power dice, keep in mind 1 dice is potentially enough to set it off.
