'lo to all
I was just wondering about whether or not being just an above standard human is able to join the SM. Can Squats, Raltings, Ogryns, ect become Space marines for less zealous chapters (i.e not the the scorpions)
Thanks

Sub- and abhuman races are never recruited for Space Marine service, even with the "less zealous" chapters.

It depends exactly how far you want to take this. Ratlings, Ogryns and the like won't be considered, but I suspect a large part of that is down to troubles with getting the various enhancements to work, after all they're designed for "normal" humans.

That said - there is some leeway on it. The Blood Angels Codex shows us that irradiated and mutated people are still fine, as although most of their numbers are recruited from the pure tribes and not the roaming mutants, there's a line something along the lines of: "As the Aspirant looks around he will notice the kiss of radiation on his new Brothers, and shares their stunted growth". The point of the line is to show the contrast between the flawed humans beforehand and the near-perfect physical form of a Marine after the transformation.

From this, we know that *some* abnormality can be ignored.

some sure, what exactly is "standard" human in the 41st millienium? Probably a bit of mutation/weirdness. but Ogryns? I doubt it.

There is a hard line from radiation aflicted humans and the abhumans. Those recruited for the BA are still human, if slightly damaged, but it's nothing that can't be fixed. However abhumans are actually a sub-species with markedly different DNA. Simply put if a female is different enough to be incompatable with the SM process, and abhuman has no chance.

This of course ignores the fact that even if it wasn't a gentical problem, neither Ogryns or Ratlings would survive the trials to become SM. Ogryns are far to stupid and ratlings lack the physical/mental endurance.
