I'm totally new.

I don't play in tournaments and my friends that I do play with are very lenient on WYSIWYG rules.

I play Grey Knights and one of my main HQ units I intend to use is Coteaz. However, I don't like the look of the model itself.

Are there any models that come close? Or suggestions for models I could use instead? Granted, I know if I were to play in a tournament I would have to use the actual Coteaz model if they instituted firm WYSIWIG rules.

Help or advice please?

WYSIWYG refers mainly to equipment, not necessarily the model itself. If you find a model that looks better to you, then use it. Just make sure it is properly equipped and designated as a couts-as Coteaz.

Great! I wasn't 100% sure of the WYSIWYG rules/rulings.

Though, any suggestions for a potential model? I saw some Scibor models that looked decent enough. My big problem would be finding the Psyber Eagle :/

Who says Alternate Reality Corteaz has to have an eagle? Maybe your version has a trusty bat, or a parrot, or a kitted out cyberskull.

Just a small warning. Some of the scibor models are more true scale or even primarch sized. If you have no problem with your HQ being bigger than the rest of your army this is no problem, otherwise try to search for size comparison pictures. But scibor is indead a good source of really characterfull models. There is also hitechminiatures. Although there models are all around primarch - well at least a lot taller. (And most if not all are in terminator-style armor so maybe not the best for corteaz)

Another option - depending on your conversion skills - would be to kitbash your own hero. Go to a bits site and select whatever you think would fit. This would create a really unique looking model. But it also will be much work. And don't ignore the fantasy line. Some models do look really great for 40k too with only small conversions and could be the base for a cool 40k hero.
(This guy for example.)

I can't give you a specific model but have you looked at warmachine/hordes or at reaper miniatures? They have a lot of models and some could be converted into something really cool.

That would be wicked! I wonder if since my friends are loose with a few things they'll overlook the fact that my Coteaz wouldn't have an eagle and would have something else. I like the cyberskull idea a lot... or a bat...

I don't really have a problem with one character being a little larger than the others. It helps discern him across the field... which is a good AND bad thing.

I'm very new to modding characters, but I have a friend who is pretty good at it. I am having him show me a few things here and there, so I hope that I can manage well enough if I piece together my own.

And that Empire Warrior Priest looks wicked! It could definitely serve as the base for a unique Inquisitor.

I need to take another look at Warmachine/Hordes and the Reaper minis if I am going to get a broader scope of what I can and cannot use.

I saw this:

And thought it would be really cool. Especially if I could get a servoskull or something to serve as his "eagle"
