Well as you stated the Codex is right around the corner, You could aid your biker with a few friends and beef up your bike total but I would wait to see what the new codex brings to the table before going out and building an army that might or might not work well depending on what it focuses on.

As much as there is some uncertainty, from the DA codex and early rumours, there are a few things that are safe to say.

A unit of devestators would be a safe bet, with lascannons set to be far cheaper. That would give you some solid AT firepower, and some extra heavy weapons for the tactical marines.

It's safe to say librarians are going to always be useful, good psychic offence and defence. A libby in either PA or TDA is a good choice, and will work with pretty much anything.

I can't see the tanks changing much, except getting cheaper, so a predator/vindicator/whirlwind depending on what you face a lot of will probably be useful.

Hope that helps.

Glad I could help. With the rumours the way they are, Ultramarines also seem to have been a good choice. By the sound of it, they will have the option of rerolling ALL to-hit rolls with tacticals in the shoot phase, and re-roll ones on everything else, or the option of rerolling chare distance, Or even of relentless devestators.

I can't really see anything getting worse as it stands, as the Marine codex is really GW's figurehead army, and they won't mess it up. C:SM has never let me down all through 5th edition, and things are only getting better from here on in.

I second the dev and librarian recommendation, but I'd pick up the Tiggy model for the librarian as he is shaping up to be pretty special in the new codex.

If the rumors are right for Ultramarines you'll be able to buff assault or shooting or heavy weapons, so I would pick one area and work on that with standard marines. For anything else I'd wait till the new codex lands as anti tank, anti air, and CC all see new units that might be brilliant or might be terrible, so hold fire for now.

A predator with an autocannon and side-sponsor lascannons is always a good addition.

Very good suggestion. I did not even think about that. As well as librarians their usage is only going to be increased as the new codex comes out.

Who do you normally play against and what do they bring? That might help a bit. I'm no expert, but I have 16 years of experience running UM and a good sized collection (I have 3 more flyers and 5 more pods than shown below... and I just added 10 Sternguard too)

Why thank you... btw, @OP one of the biggest things I recommend, is buying predators and not rhinos/razorbacks. With a little creativity and about $4 in bits/magnets you can make a Predator that can also convert down to a Razorback/which converts to rhino. It took me about 3 rhinos to figure that out. Right now I have 11 chasis... which can give me up to 4 predators, 3 whirlwinds, 4 razorbacks (and about three variants each at that)... or 9 rhinos and whatever on the other 2. I could have done all that with my 2 vindicators... but I field them enough that I just left them glued together. Seriously... get 3 predators and make them Pred/Whirlwind/Razorback/Rhinos. For the whirlwinds there a several cheap but nice third party missile pods out there... you only need 3, after all.

Right now, if I were you, I'd get either 3 pods or 3 predator/rhinos, and then 25 more tactical marines... because, from them (with light bit buys) you can make devastators/sternguard/tactical marines... all of which look like they'll be solid units next codex. People put down the lowly rhino, but anything that can give you mobility (18" move in a turn) and allows protection for all the AP3 and better spam out there is worth it. Rhinos can hurt on KillPoint missions, but on the other missions, just combat squad and go.

I can echo the advice of Lobukia regarding flexibility in your marine models.

Marines have so many options in terms of loadouts. Don't pigeon hole yourself into a couple of builds by gluing weapons and arms to the torsos. Buy magnets! The minute you magnetize one item you'll be thankful. You'll literally have a use for every bit you own and acquire in the future. Not to mention that units/weapons/builds are constantly going in and out of style; so you never know- this week's loser item might be next week's hottest item

I own about 3k Templars and whatever 2 battle companies of UM/CF points out as.

The Templars are a very brutal, thuggish group of Teutonic zealots. They are a massive brotherhood apart. Truly devoted to crusade and unfettered by planetary chains, they take war to humanity's foes... Within and without.

The UM are blueblooded warrior scholars that arrogantly sponsor hundreds of chapters and hundreds of planets. Many chapters love them for their war college and pan-chapter leadership... Others despise them for their aloof manner and their battle record (which includes twice ruling the Imperium and then benignly turning it back over to the non-post humans).

I'd advise either playing whichever one appeals to you, or which ever chapter has the rules you like more in one month.

Looks like you've got 2 and a half tactical squads. I say take the five loners and either A) complete the squad or B) get the bits to make yourself a Devastator or Sternguard squad.

Space Wolves: 3770
Orks: 3000
Chaos Daemons: 1750
Warriors of Chaos: 2000

I'd hold off on a new HQ until the codex comes out. Which one is best, and how to gear him is probably one of the most volatile changes with each new edition/codex.

A 5 man Dev box is a solid choice. If for nothing else then to give you more options for your tac squads.

Boosting the bike to a full, usable squad is safe. What weapons to give them is going to be the big question. Magnets are your friend here. Adding an attack bike is another good call.

Some transports would go a long way as well. Either drop pods, or rhinos. If you go for rhinos, pick up some other rhino-based vehicle, like a razor/pred/WW. Any of these could be swapped for use as a basic transport, or as a tank.

A 5 man sniper scout team will probably camp objectives just as well under the new codex as they do in the old. Worth picking up.

Ah Lobukia, I aspire to have that many marines some day. Slowly but surely!

To the OP, a couple of questions for ya.
What are you wanting to do with this army? Ultramarines are a jack of all trades, master of none type of army, but if played right can cause serious harm and take down armies.

As others have said, I definitely agree on getting a devastator box or 2, and some more tactical marines.
Sternguards are also an excellent choice in the Elites table, for the amount of fire power and weapon versatility. Don't buy the kits for them though, just convert tactical marines with bits and paint them as Sterns (it's what I did for 15 of mine).

Look for TFC's, as they are an excellent heavy support choice *right now* in the codex.

Get Preds, as Lobukia has stated. They are great tanks, and if mag'ed right, can be down-converted to Rhinos/Razorbacks.

As far as chapters go, Ultramarines are an excellent one to play. I'm the only Ultramarines player in my area at all, which gives it a unique look, even though they are the staple army for SMs.
