Subject: How to build a competitive goblin list...

Hello Dakka. Ill be participating in a tournament (a ways off) with my all goblin army. The game size is 2000pts.
I'm choosing gobbos as they are my most crazy fun painted army. However I rarely ever do well with the little buggers. They are very irritating to my opponent but lack the hitting power to finish opponents.
Anyone more experienced please. Advise me on how to build a good tournament army at 2k. I will list what I own, but I can always add to my list, I have time.
Goblin characters a plenty. No "special" characters except a scratch built counts as skarsnik.
50 NG with spears and nets
50 NG with HW (painted yellow to be happy day goblins)
60 NG with bows
40 Forrest goblins with bows (could add shields to be spears easily)
7 fanatics
3 skulkers
1 spider (wolf) chariot
20 spider riders (could convert to some other kind of rider)
2 bolt throwers
1 rock lobba
5 trolls
2 pump wagons with out riggas
1 pump wagon with flappas and out rigga
2 mangler squigs
1 giant spider
I am not looking to win, but would rather not get pasted every game. Any advice would be great. I'm building some squigs but I don't know if at 2k how helpful they would be.
Well Dakka how would you recommend I build a 2k list?

This is a great start. i would look at 2 50 man units and break the 60 archers into 2 units of 30. nets and fanatics to taste.
1 spider (wolf) chariot
20 spider riders (could convert to some other kind of rider)
your core IMHO should be used to give chariots a flank to hit, and for their price i would take quite few. Any scope for bashing those spider riders into more themed "spider chariots"?
2 bolt throwers
1 rock lobba
5 trolls
2 pump wagons with out riggas
1 pump wagon with flappas and out rigga
2 mangler squigs
1 giant spider
Spear chukkas defo and the manglers as well. Doom divers are needed though. too good not to take.
Depends on what you like to run but i would be thinking something like a Level 4, 2 Level 2's 1 with a scroll, a BSB with standard of discipline and a warboss to get the best Ld bubble and reroll you can get your hands on. Then a few cheap GW Big Bosses for added zing.
Hope this helps

Seen a power list of 8 bigbosses, 8 bosses in a unit of 50 odd archers/netters with fanatics. Plan is stand and shoot. Then when in combat all characters have to get hit individually. Scatter a few great weapons and magic weapons in and poison banner. Should always be steadfast.
It is a massive points sink but it's goblins. It's fun.

Doom divers

War Machines, War Machines and War Machines.
If you want to go competitive with OnG, especially with pure Goblins, you need to max out on Rock Lobbers and Doom Divers. Spear Chukkas are less good, but are still good to take (just maybe not max out).
Small-ish units of NG Archers to guard the War Machines are good, as is a large block to act as a bunker. Squig Herds and Squig Hoppers will be your heavy hitters. Take a Lvl 4 Shaman, with a fair few Lvl 1 NG Shamans for extra dice shenanigans. You'll need a Warboss to act as General though. Goblin Ld is bad as it is.

The two standard lists are the artillery heavy savage list, or the artillery heavy 100 Goblin archer poison banner list.

For a pure Gobbo-list, I'd mention a few things:
- your lvl4 should not be a Night Goblin. 1 in 6 chance of Broken Concentration means it's not a worthwhile plan.
- a (non-Night) Goblin Warboss is pretty mandatory, as said. Great weapon + Armour of Silvered Steel + Dawnstone + Ironcurse Icon is 146pts and a pretty tough little general.
- with Sneaky Stealin', having a couple lvl1 Night Goblin Shamans can give you a pretty decent magic phase. Slap on a Dispel Scroll/Power Stone/Channeling Staff, and I've done well.
- big blocks of Night Goblins need Nets. Shields are better than spears. I personally find bows to offer a lot of versatility with only a slight loss in durability, though that might differ for you.
Small blocks of archers can be great, too. Fanatics in any of them work well.
After that, you play the Killer Chaff game; Manglers, Wagons, and Chariots do wonders. Doom Divers and Rock Lobbers are amazing (if you have Fanatics and Manglers, I'd double-up on Lobbers before Divers for a wider threat-range, but two of both is common).
Finally, a decent block of Trolls (6 min.) and/or a Squig Herd can really get the job done.

About a week ago I got beat down by gigantic spider spam.
The guy had IIRC:
Goblin Warboss on foot
Goblin Great Shaman on wolf
3x Goblin Warbosses on Monstrous Cav spiders
5x Goblin Big Bosses on Monstrous Cav Spiders
Goblin Big Boss BSB on Foot
1 Goblin shaman on wolf
40 or so wolf riders in various sized units
Big block 50-60 goblins on foot for the BSB and general to hide in.
4 pump wagons
6 goblin chariots
The 8 characters mounted on monstrous cav won it for him. They in very short order swept away all my chaff. Then the spider lords/heroes grouped up and made a charge together, with the goblin signature spell thing (armor piercing); chariots into the flank and characters did enough to strip steadfast. Surviving characters over-ran into a flank and with the signature spell giving re-rolls to hit and to wound, they crushed.
I REALLY needed a comet; or a sword of anti-heroes.

That sounds like an amazing list HawaiiMatt. I'm curious if he gave them great weapons or spears or something like 5 point magic items?
I guess with 12 Str 4 (6?) from the characters, three stomps and 12 posion from the spiders its a pretty nasty unit. Although small arms and dedicated shooting could clear it pretty quick.

Not necessarily, the would mostly have a 2-3+ armor save each and 3 wounds a piece. I'm amazed that people can get spells off when they need to. i played O&G last night and rolled an average of 3.7 for power dice during 5 turns. Animosity caused me to charge a unit I had chance of killing. I failed a terror test and lost my big units.
My Arachnarok is the only steady performer

He had an enchanted shield, dragon helm and some cheap heavy armor on 3 of the characters; giving him 3 spiders with 2+ armor. Everyone had a spear.
Shooting is actually pretty ineffective at stopping them.
If you've got enough shooting, he can simply break off the heroes into 8 individuals and at most you're killing one at a time.
My downfall was being unable to make panic tests a problem for him.

I think the biggest problem is lack of armor splitters. If the O&G player was facing empire, Bret's or WOC or all mounted HE he would have had a tougher time. Go box don't have anything that breaks armor outside of doom divers and troll spit.
Sounds fun none the less

All the characters are S5 on the charge, and all the wizards can give Armor Piercing, it's decent, but not awesome.
Oh, all 4 pump wagons had the ignore armor on the 1st charge upgrade.

See, OnG Lores are pretty good. Everyone seems to underestimate a signature spell that give Armour Piercing, as well as potential extra bonuses.

The lores are good, but, from memory, the Little Waagh spells seem to encourage putting your characters into 100 archers with the poison banner.
The sig is Armour Piercing.
Blah blah Magic Missile.
GIft of the Spider God, for 5+ poison.
Gork'll Fix it can be used in conjunction with Sneaky Stabbin' seeing as a 4/5+ is the norm for infantry nowadays.
Night Shroud puts them in soft cover, which can be used pretty well.
And a vortex.
At least 3 of those actually make the 100 archer list look pretty good. And that is not counting the 100 archers.

Armor piercing doesn't work on the short bows.
It's much better on the S5 attacks to give you an armor buster than it is on the S3 melee attacks.
Gork'll Fix it is solid, Itchy is actually really good (-D6 from movement and init), as it lets the heroes strike first, and can pin an enemy block which magnifies the speed advantage.

I've actually tried a similar list; lots of Gigantic Spiders, some Spider Riders, "Spider" Chariots, the Big Bug, and two decent blocks of regular Goblins with shields, short bows, full command and Nasty Skulkers.
There were tons of moderately-tempting targets to choose from, and then the Arachnarok.
The Gobbo blocks did really well, actually, since the front line was a character, a Boss, and three Skulkers. Really limits the number of casualties you'll suffer in that phase, and combined with a flank charge from a big Spider or Chariot, that was enough to send a lot of enemies running.
Though I will admit, getting Sneaky Stabbing off on a block for Skulker re-rolls was the most satisfying part of the list.
