Good morning guys,
Brief history: I've been playing 40k since 2008, played one army the entire time, our beloved Imperial guard. I have probably 5000+ points, a decent amount of stuff. Unfortunately during this time Ive been playing with primed models.
So my brother and I just took about a 1 year break right at the end of 5th edition and are just coming back to the hobby now. I'd like to try and rectify my mistake and slowly work on getting my guard painted up.
Problem is I cannot decide what to paint these guys like... ive tried a few things but dont like anything Ive tried. I am planning on working on a small blood angels force to ally with so I thought it would be cool to give them a similar paint scheme (and red is my favorite color).
I really just need to find a 1st grader level "step by step how to paint a mini" tutorial online and see what I can do. Anways,
What do you guys think of blood angel guardsmen?
And do you think... red clothing, white armor plates?
Thanks for any thoughts.

If you want to do it do it. You could just say it's Baal's PDF supported by a force of BA. Red clothing and white plates sounds interesting when I first heard the description I thought of red armour with white clothing. For the white on my WE I do Ulthan grey followed by Delvan Mud wash then I layer on Ulthan grey and then and couple of very thin layers of skull white. Then I normally use some dark brown pigments to add a bit of texture.

I think with white armour plates you may end up with the white being too much of a focal point in the scheme to immediately jump to a blood angel conclusion. I'd put the armour plates on infantry, and main body armour on tanks as the red to enforce more of a blood angelly vibe and go for a beige to white cloth for the rest of the clothing. White can however be rather unforgiving to paint well. You could always prime white and darken it through shades.

Red clothing and white armour plates would be a nice striking effect. However white can be a pain in the bum to paint, so do some trial runs first
Fluffwise Baal doesn't really have a PDF as its a radioactive husk of a world populated with semi-feral nomads, however there is still nothing stopping you from painting your Guard as a homage to the BAs

My suggestion would be to flip the idea. Go with red armor plates and a white uniform. You would do the white first, using a light grey, dry brush lightly over that with a white, or off white color, and then go back with a darker grey wash to shade and blend it in together. After that, come back in with you red for the hard armor. Would your ideal be a dark red offsetting the white, or a brighter final color?

Hey guys, thank for the suggestions.
@stratassj - I wouldn't want it to be too bright... but not muddy either. If you look at blood red for example that is a bit much, much as I love red.
White clothing with red armor sounds like it could be quite striking. The guys are so little, thats all we want is a bit of distinction on the board.

So, what do you think of this as the basis for a color set up?
The color list for it
Hard Armor: Wazdakka Red
Uniform: Celestra Grey
Straps and pouches: Steel Legion Drab
Metalics: Lead Belcher
Boots and shinguards: Mournfang Brown.

I think it looks great (or as great as the paint program can make it look). Nice contrast.
I am partially color blind so I probably dont even see it like you do, but I like it!
I see you've listed out the paint, are there any other colors I should pick up for this? I know sometimes (or ive read at least) a few different colors are used when putting on different layers or highlighting.
Lastly,
Thanks so much for your assistance, Ive been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what to do with these guys.

I would base your reds with khorne red and work your way upto Wazadakka for a bit of shading and colour change. Similarly you'll want to start with a darker tone and highlight on the greys or start with the lighter tone and shade down so the coloursarent flat. Highlight leadblecher with... runefang I believe it is or shade down with nuln oil (or both).
Browns can be washed with agrax earthshade.

No worries there marbo, i've got some colorblindness too so, i know how that goes.. makes painting an interesting challenge, having to stop and ask "does this look good?" I think it starts getting on my wife's nerves after the sixth time in an hour..
And yes, afew different colors would be helpful in getting up to around that point that the painter shows. As Melcavuk said, base the red with Khorne Red then layer on Wazdakka. If you want to give that some highlights i would suggest using Evil Sunz Scarlet. Then as a shading wash use Carroburg Crimson.
For the Grey, my question is are they primed white, or black? If white, go right to the Celestra Grey, hit it with a light drybrush of any white you might have, and then go in, make a wash with Administratum grey and apply it over the cloth. If your basecoat is black, start with administratum grey, then celestra grey, to white, and then wash it back for the shadeing.
On the metalagain Melcavuk's advice is spot on, same as for the browns.
And i enjoy helping out where i can

I think red guardsmen are fine. Any color guardsmen are fine. I'm doing henchmen red and black.
I personally am afraid of doing a red and white scheme because there would be too much contrast between the red and white.

Boots should be black, greaves may be bright red, red armor and gun housing is OK but grey jacket and trousers?? nah!

I wouldn't do all the boots completely red.

Agreed, red boots look a bit kinky - black or grey or brown would seem more 'military'. Unless you want the kinky look, of course...
I like the red and white colour scheme. Another variant would be to change that white to a dark red, i.e. they'd be wearing two-tone red.

The boots are supposed to be brown, but Dakka's painter doesn't exactly match the actual paint colors perfectly.
