Howdy Dakkanauts, Today I'm looking for ideas about a Thousand Sons army I want to build using the current CSM rules. I am looking to do around a 1.5k army to start out with and I would like the army to be fluffy while still being playable so Maulerfiends and the like are out however I wouldn't be opposed to a Helldrake.

Personally I will use the cultist models as Spire Guard (IG Allies). It gives a few more fluffy options and numbers. But then again, that would not be true to use only the CSM codex

I wrote this list on my blog a few days ago: http://www.imperiusdominatus.com/2013/08/army-lists-chaos-space-marines-thousand.html it uses Daemon allies, though you could always drop them out and that will drop the list down to about 1,500.

This is a huge bummer for me seeing as the army is pretty expensive to get going and everything I read about Thousand Sons says they are god awful. I really want to play CSM for a change of pace from my Eldar but none of the other cult troops or legions interest me.

Alot of peope struggle with the 1ksons, but half of playing any army is knowing what the army can do. 1ksons are durable and excel at killing meqs/ infantry out of cover. Take advantage of these facts and build the army with those in mind. Drakes can easily be used to force the enemy forward and out of cover, where you can tear then apart with bolters. In the end pick the units you like, you won't be the tourney meta with the sons, but you'll enjoy them alot if you except what they can do, and what they cannot.

9x 1ksons

Land Raider - destroyer and dozer blades
Land Raider - destroyer and dozer blades

3x obliterators

Now just think about that for a moment. Starting out, you have two pieces of AV14 on the table, with HP4. Then, if your opponent can open one up, everything inside is 4++ or 3++. With four rolls, you've got a decent chance to get invisibility, which means even those land raiders can get a "4++". So we're starting from a position of absurd durability.

Then you go down the roster for killing power. MCs are laughable with 4 force axes (some on 3++s), not to mention TL obliterator plasma when they arrive, and TLLCs from the land raiders. Vehicles are TLLCed or rammed, and TL meltad from obliterators, and you have krak grenades and a decent chance of doom bolt. Terminators will have to face all that serious durability, with power weapons to face them. MEq has to deal with Ap3 bolters, and obliterator plasma. Fliers have to deal with TL plasma obliterators, and TLLCs from the raiders, and even if the raiders are opened, everyone's favorite helldrake is bouncing shots off of all those ++s. Hordes get destroyer bladed and twin-linked flamers, plus whatever psychic abilities you're looking for (there are lots that are good against hordes.

So you've got something with good mobility, being either in a land raider, or deepstriking, and you've got good enough killing power, and you've got fearsome durability.

And it's fluffy as all get out.

Probably going to go and make some purchases for this tonight, Still trying to decide on a final list that I want to build. Any other ideas for a cool 1k sons list? I know they are bad so I am more or less looking to make a fun list, but I would still like it to be playable.

Personally I like the idea of Ahriman in the list because, well, he's the chief sorcerer for 1k sons! So have him for sure.

I've always liked Tzeentch Termis. Run a Sorcerer lord with T. Armor and some other toys in a Land Raider with some bodyguards.

3 Units of 1k sons at 9 guys each. Durable, AP3 shooting.

Obliterators with the mark, 2+/4++ not too shabby

Heldrakes (2) will round that out nicely.

Half the battle with any list/army is knowing the units as was mentioned. A tactically sound general can usually tease a positive result out of just about any list against a given opponent. The rest is down to the dice gods.
