I am looking to do a easy rubble / concrete basing for my necron army that would not be too time consuming.(easy color scheme, bolt gun metal followed with a black wash - flat black on weapons / vehicle hulls - dark green followed by scorpion green on eyes / glow pieces - bronze followed by a black wash on cloaks / upper hierarchy stand out bits - super easy and fast and has the necron shadowy army look). Now I am stuck on doing bases before I assemble.

I ran across http://www.krylon.com/products/make-it-stone-textured-paint/ and i think the charcoal sand followed by a heavy black wash might look decent and fit with the overall scheme.

Has anyone else used the product or think it would work?

I have used it to spray paint styrofoam terrain (which it ate into...)

The consistency is very strange, and I would have concerns about long-term durability. You are better off using sand and super glue, then just washing and dry brushing the sand.

Tier 1 is the new Tactical.

Some regular spray paint will eat styrofoam, the product says its useable on plastics (might have to test it first to be sure) ... i didn't think about the long term, I figure its on par with regular sand / flock since it should bind to the plastic - i've gotten some feedback on another forum from a guy who used it for a gaming table and 6 years later is still around.

... might just have to pick up a can and try it on my scarab bases to see, this might be one of those shortcuts that is amazing or utter fail.

On the Internet

Trick for spray painting styrofoam: thinly coat it with PVA glue, which, when dry, forms a protective layer for the styrofoam. I've heard of wood glue being used to the same effect. You may want to water it down slightly to make it "paint" on easier, and in a thinner layer.

I don't have any experience using spray paints for basing, but there are some wonderful premade bases available via Secret Weapon Miniatures & DragonForge. Basically all you need to do once you get the bases in the mail is throw down 1 layer of base color, (Optional: use a wash) then apply a drybrush coat & boom your done. No texture paint needed, or putting down rocks etc. You could always add grass after the fact as well if you wanted.
