I am an average painter, and need help in painting some Grey Knights. So what spray, what basecoat layers so on. Thanks. Note: Citade pain range only!

I am given to understand that some people just grab Plate Mail Army Painter spray and wash with black, then details to taste.

Mine are all purifiers so I prime white for the helms. I use Leadbelcher with Drakenhof Nightshade for wash, I like the blue steel effect it yields.

There seems to be a lot of this going on these last few days, but I think I can help... try this.

I've already googled it thanks... But I wanted help from someone who has painted them and the method is pretty simple, as most of the ones I have googled are slightly above the standard I am looking for.

I find it hard to believe that none of the tutorials that show up on that Google search have anything to offer. Not to mention there are literally dozens of video tutorials on YouTube ranging from simple to to display quality. Just find one you like and try it.

Well a fair few of them use other paint ranges, and a mixture of different ranges. Anyway, I just wanted a fairly simple method of how to paint them, after I have already found some ideas on google, but I wanted a bit of extra advice from here. Don't wanna argue or nothing, but thats my reasons why I came here.

You are right to come here, its what this is for. People do tend to more helpful if.you go with an an idea and ask advice on that rather than being so general.

Me, I would go down the army painter route, spray with plate mail and pick the details as required, a good wash then highlights. I use his method with my models.but the red spray.

Once you get to that point post a picture up and you'll find more people will help tweaking what you have done.

Thanks for the advice, and sorry to sound stupid ( I've only just returned to the hobby) but is the plate mail spray a general spray, or is it citadel or another brand? Thanks. Also I will take some pics and upload them once I get started.

It's army painter spray paint, they do coloured primers. Plate mail is the colour (silverish).

Great, I might have to pick one of them up soon as I only have blak and white primers at the moment.

Following the simple guide in the WD issue they were released in gave me simple yet very effective results. Some of my own comments add as nessecary to aid transition between colours

- Spray Black as this is great for silver to go over and leaves details like the text darker in the recesses.
-Basecoat all the metal in Leadbelcher. This includes the blades.
-Wash the recesses armour with Drakenhoff Nightshade.
-Run either Drakenhoff Nightshade or Guilliman Blue over the blade. Easier than Wet Blending and gives nice results IMO.
-Highlight the armour with Ironbreaker.
-Basecoat the text with Brown of some kind.
-Edge highlight the armour's sharp edges with Runefang Steel. -Layer the text with Gehenna's Gold.
-Finally highlight the most "standout" words such as Knight, Victory and stuff with watered down Golden Griffon Dry paint. Alternatively you can use Golden Griffon to drybrush it all, or highlight with Burnished Gold's new equivilent.

For hereldry your on your own. I'm not good at freehand but anything related to skulls, swords, fire, books or similar is common.

Eyes can be done in a number of ways. The way I do it is apply a blob of Drakenhoff Nightshade into the lense, then soak up excess so it doesn't overflow but does cover the lense. Then apply gloss varnish so it dries shiny.

Then appy gloss varnish to the blades.

Two words of warning about using Army Painter Platemail. I used it for few squads and decided it was not what I wanted.

First, it is really light color. Closest GW color is somewhere between Chainmail (Ironbreaker) and Mithril Silver (Runefang Steel).
So if you were aiming for darker metallic look, like the examples used in WD, platemail is not a good choice.

Second, the end result is kinda glossy and it was pretty hard to get new paint layers to "stick" to it, especially painting gold on top of it was pain.
Personally, I bit the bullet and went for Airbrush and Vallejo Gun Metal.

Or, having become tired of seeing various shades of gray and metallic silver square off on the board, you can forgo the "traditional" paint schemes and just do your own thing.

I agree with Luide, the army painter Plate Mail is not easy to use and the finish is a bit disappointing. Airbrush is still the best option, on need to pay à lot to have à good one.

I just attempted to paint about 5k in gk this week. Only got about 2.5k done. For just about every model I used black primer. Then base coat of leadbelcher. You could if you wanted use a highlight of chainmail or whatever its called now. Wash in nuln oil. I used Memphis ton red for the guns. Came out not to bad.

If you have an aribrush, you might want to try airbrushing on VMA artic blue, then Gunmetal and aluminian.
