So when the rumors started coming out for the next space marine codex i thought which chapter might be different from the others. And after looking at the different chapters rumored in the codex i had never heard anything about the iron hands, let alone i didnt even know they were a marine chapter.

I dont really know of any rumors aside from the new models coming out so i figured i could learn a bit of the fluff behind the iron hands as well as if theres any novels about them that could help as well.

Thanks for any info!

The information in the current Marines Codex is a good start, if a bit minimal. They're quite cold and distant even compared to other Chapters (except perhaps the Dark Angels) - because of their cozy relationship with the Adeptus Mechanicus they're viewed with mistrust by other Chapters. They use bionics heavily, and by choice in order to improve rather than just as replacements for injuries, which is how other Chapters approach bionics. Their Techmarines are also given much more respect, and not shunned by more ordinary Brothers as you'd find elsewhere.

Much, much more here:

They also have a chapter council of a representative from each Clan Company, instead of a Chapter Master. Each Clan also operates a lot more independantly than standard Battle Companies do of each other.

If you get chance I'd give Wrath of Iron a read it's a pretty good story and it gives a good insight on how the IH function with the other arm of the Imperium.

That would be the Drop Site Massacre during the Horus Heresy:

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Drop_Site_Massacre#.UhTgSz95adw

Considering it happened 10,000 years before the current setting of the game, it doesn't have any impact on the current fighting strength of their chapter. However, it probably reinforced their obsession with purging themselves of weakness after their failure on Istvaan V and the loss of their primarch: "After the Heresy... the Iron Hands became recluses, attempting to find ways to make themselves even stronger so that they would be fit for serving under Manus again at the end of times."

Iron Hands are supposed to have very few suits of Terminator armor because almost all of their HH suits were destroyed in the massacre.
Their power armor squads are often led by Sergeants in TDA though improving morale and marking the sergeants veteran status.

The Iron Hands and their successors also hate just about every other SM chapter.
They hate the Traitors for turning traitor
They hate the Sallys and Raven Guard(and all loyalist SMs a bit) for leaving them in the dirt at Istvaan V
They hate all SM for abusing the mechanicus

They are 100% loyal(well I play a Renegade IH homebrew, but the loyal ones are very loyal)
They have a pure geneseed(but like to replace flesh with bionics anyway)

Read through all the articles and learned a lot!

The massacre was crazy and pretty much devastated the iron hands.

As it seems they replace their own body parts with mechanical ones trying to make themselves stronger and rid themselves of weakness.

Their companies dont have any dedicated scouts or veteran units, as well as terminators are rare. It seems that theres rarely whole squads used but it seems that standard tactical squad sergeants are equipped with TDA to better inspire their units. (any rumors lead to the possibility of upgrading a sergeant in a squad to have TDA armor instead of using a whole squad of Termies)

Are their any rumors of if each chapter will have their own abilities like will the iron hands have some ability the makes the different than any other chapter?

The rumars are:
Army wide 6+ FNP
Army wide IWND (note that only things with more than 1 wound/HP can take advantage)
Techmarines and Master of the Forge get +1 to repair rolls

Automatically Appended Next Post:
also note that the rumors are every chapter gets something special to replace the old Combat Tactics

Ultramarines get reroll charge distances OR Army Wide twin linked OR Devs are relentless + armywide reroll snapshots.

So these things are all very powerful.

If you wanted to show the use of TDA for sergeants you could use the SW codex.

Old fluff, Clan Raukaan in Wrath of Iron deploys I think eight suits of TDA; one on the Clan Commander, four on his bodyguard squad, one leading their veteran squad, and two leading 1st and 2nd tactical squads. Some Clan Companies will have a couple less, some a couple more, but there's no rational reason for the IH to still be short on TDA suits after ten thousand years, particularly when you consider their ties to the Mechanicus.

Wrath of Iron was pretty good at portraying how hard core they are and some of their structure:

I liked this quote from the book:

"We take ordinary bodies and make them better," she admitted. "We do so because we desire to improve on what we were born with. The Iron Hands cannot make their bodies better, since they are aready perfect. Nevertheless, still they amputate their limbs in favour of metal parts and aspire to the state of machine-hood. Why? Because they fear the flesh, lord general. They look at it in the mirror of their minds and they see something loathsome."
