The new rules for the lucius drop pod say it can be taken as a dedicated transport for any imperial dreadnaught from all the space marine chapters excluding grey knights.

wording is:
"may transport a single imperial dreadnaught or dreadnaught variant"

Would that mean I could use one to drop Bjorn, because he is a dreadnaught?

Thoughts?

Or am i better to ask forgeworld direct for an absolute answer?

Funny thing the first picture on the FW site of the drop pod is it containing björn.

Nice. Haven't had a look at that yet. Was just flicking through the new apocalypse book and thought to query it.

So would that be a yes? Lol

Nope thats not a rule .

Nevertheless if the rule says what you wrote than björn is eligible. He is a dreadnought or dreadnought variant. His unit type is "Venerable Dreadnought (Unique)" and he is therefor eligible to use a lucius drop pod. Have fun

This tactic sounds like a go then.

Burn in turn 1 with several dreadnoughts in Lucius pods, then follow up with hunters and guard turn 2, when the Dreadnoughts disembark their pods and wreck face.

I wonder would contemptors count as a dread varient as well then?

I don't know. I don't own any IA books whatsoever, but I recall something about them being unable to enter regular DP or Stormravens, but I may be completely wrong on those. Assuming they are correct, RAI they might not. RAW they vertainly can.

My understanding is that Contemptors can go in Lucius pods and that's actually the only advantage of taking a Lucius pod since most dreads have access to regular pods as dedicated transports anyway (besides a couple exception like Bjorn or Ashmantle).

The advantage of a Lucius is that it allows assault on the turn it arrives, thus.allowing Ironclads to get into combat, and also BA Blenders. Although they had the Stormraven so they could use that.

Well BA cannot take them so sadly iron clads are the only real option.

I thought the new Apoc book had gotten rid of the assaulting-on-arrival option?

Yes the new apoc book states that you cannot assault the turn the pod arrives, but the change was that you do not have to disembark from it the turn the pod arrives.

So, short of needing to pod a contemptor or a character-dread, there's no strategic advantage to using the Lucius over a standard pod?

Well, right now a Lucius you stay inside of when you land. A standard pod forces you out.

Protection. If its correct that they can stay inside for a turn that's added protection.

Can it shoot during that turn?

It follows all the normal rules for shooting out of an open-topped vehicle that moved at cruising speed.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Wont make a huge difference if its a melee dread.

But if the doors are open it could still shoot and be shot at, just not assaulted since youd have to assault the drop pod.

EDIT: on a side note, they could make it so that it just counts as open topped when it lands so that the dread could fire out and noone could shoot the dread.

How do you shoot at an embarked unit?

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

If they dont state that the pod is open topped or has a fire point, but that the dread can still shoot, then i would be assuming you could shoot the dread back.

It's still an open topped transport.
Just like every other drop pod.

Its an open topped transport, so you have no permission to shoot at the embarked unit

I don't know if the point cost is the same as before but if it is, it's a bit steep for what it does. Granted dropping a dual Kheres wielding Mortis Contemptor in the back field with a "free" round of shooting will hurt but the enemy will have plenty of time to line up the lascannons and melta after that. At least before you could get buried in the assault and avoid getting shredded...
