I wanted to do a thematic armor/mechanized division. Also I want to avoid "rare weapons" fluff wise to show this is a run of the mill IG unit. It is going to be costly ($$$) so I do not want to embark on it has little chance of being effective. Keep in mind I know very little about IG. No one in my area plays them and I have only played Tau and Tyranids.

HQ

2 Techpriest (each will be attached to a different vet squad)

Troop
4 Vets squads each with 1 flamer and 2 grenade launchers, each mounted in a Chimera with Hull mounted Heavy flamer and extra armor and a heavy stubber

Fast Attack
2 Scout Sentinels with missiles

Heavy
4 Leman Russ Battle Tanks with Las cannon, Heavy bolter sponsons, extra armor and a heavy stubber

2 Hydras with extra armor
cost 1845/1850

The basic idea is that that tanks will move up with the Chimera's behind them. If the tanks can't disloge infantry from an objective or are threatened by CC units the chimera and vets move up to deal with them.
Sentinels and Hyrdas hang back for air cover and fire support.

The HQ repairs units as needed.

Could this work?

I also am considering a light mechanized recon unit. I will post that one separately later and will compare the feedback on both. Thanks in advance!

Techpriests cannot be taken as your mandatory HQ choice, please see the IG codex FAQ on GWs sight and give it a good read over.

You'll also see when you read the FAQ that the Leman Russ lost Lumbering Behemoth, so if you fire the battle cannon your snap shotting everything else.

I'll leave the dakka community to fill you in on everything else concerning the MechVet IG list.

Well, in short no. But let's get into the details.

1) Tech priest cannot be take as the Mandatory HQ choice. This is clearly written in the FAQ, I know the codex doesn't make it obvious.

2) Vet squad armed how you have are going to end up lucky or dead. They will not reliably do what ever it is you think they'll do. But the chimera is almost there, drop the Stubber and you're good.

3) Sentinels are always Sub par, Fast attack choices are Vendetta. If you want Fluffy go for Hellhounds not optimal but much better than Sentinels.

4) If you are avoiding Vendettas, Hydras are your best anti air. One unit will die to the incoming flyers fire, you'll need two to have any hope of them doing their job.

With your Thoughts of mech division I would suggest a mech vets approach. Basically you load up on Metla and Plasma then stuff it in chimeras and ride to glory.

Something like:

CCS w/ 4 melta Chimera ML and HVY Flamer. x2

Vets w/ 3 Plasma Chimera ML and HVY Flamer x3

Hellhounds probably squads of 1x3

Hydras probably squads of 2x3

That ends up somewhere around 1650. I would toss in a PSB in a chimera for fun. I love those guys.

PSB = Psychic Battle Squad. I thought there would be hover over.
