Hey all! The wife and I are finally getting back into minis, and this time my 8 year old son is coming along!

I've painted (poorly) in the past, (same with the Mrs) but our son is 100% new.

I'm looking for something that we can watch to get a solid foundation of the basics. I want my boy to learn proper, and frankly I need to learn as well.

So is this a quality product? I don't mind spending money, but I don't want it to be wasted.

It is one of the very few I would call worth it. Production quality is great and you are really walked througth taking a model from start to finish.

I have to disagree with the prior poster. I did not think this dvd was worth it. You can get far more out of some of the competition, like the hot lead dvds.

The p3 dvd isn't bad, just overpriced for what it is imo.

I'll have to look for Hotleads then, because the P3 covers setting up the work area, prep and assembly, each stage of painting by completely painting the the whole model while you watch. In the painting it covers all the core techniques in good detail, points out common errors, and give some tips on using advanced stuff like mixing medium. If you are an experienced painter with good skills there is not much in the P3 that you would not already know, but then the DVD is straight targeted to beginners and/or poor painters.

There are also a ton of great channels on YouTube. Schnauzerface, awesomepaintjob, to think of two off the top of my head, and they are free.

MWG is another good resource and for like $10 a month you can download all their videos.

Now with 100% more blog....

You can probably get pretty much the same product for free on youtube.

Heck, someone's probably ripped the DVD and put it on youtube.

It seems like you have seen both. I'm trying to decide between the two.

For a rank beginner, who is a child, which would be easier to follow to grasp the basics?

Honestly if you are after nothing but basics neither one of these videos are what you really need.

If I were you I would look for videos on youtube covering the absolute basics of miniafure prepping and painting. There are tons of decent videos and they are all free.

I actually own both the hot lead series and the p3 dvd and have used techniques from both, but have learned quite a bit more from the hot lead series. I would suggest it when you feel ready to step past the basics.

buypainted on youtube is very, very good. He also has a lot of easy techniques he does that get very good results and are really easy to do for beginners like oil washing for shading (and if you stuff up you can just go over the stuffed up spot with white spirits).

MWG can be good, and Massivevoodoo has some good tutorials that are picture-based.

I would advise starting with cheap models with a black spray primer and just doing the basics (base, highlights, wash) then advancing onto things like white spray primer at 45 degree angle over black primer to provide natural highlighting areas, oil washing, tamiya red for blood effects, advancing basing, etc.
