I have been considering another 40k army(preferably xenos as I have csm and da) but I was wondering if anyone has looked at the battleforce boxes and looked at which box gives you the best collection of minatures to use for an army. I play fantasy ogres and when I need to add to that army I can buy battallion box after box since everything is very usable. So for 40k with the curent state of the game as it is.....Which battleforce box in your opinion is worth buying and buying again for an army????

The added benifit of that is it can be used by any of the marine chapters. Im curious if it will change with the new codex

I would say crons.

20 Warriors

5 Immortals/Deathmarks

All of it is useful and effective in game

Tyranids:
3 Warriors (used as Prime as there is no model)
8 Genestealers (used as Ymgarl as there are no models)
16 Termagants
16 Hormagants

Buy a few boxes and you can really go all out Swarm.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

You're confusing your favourite force with the best battle force box.

The tyranid one is lousy, as warriors, hormagants and genestealers are all sub-par choices at present.

Genestealers at the moment are not that great, but run them as Ymgarl and after a few games, your opponent will stay as far away from area terrain as possible.
With all the bits you get, you can easily make the Hormagaunts Spinegaunts or Devilgaunts (or upgrade the Termagants, and give the Hormagaunts Fleshborers to make them Termagants).
Warriors aren't that great but again, you can use them as Primes, so right away you have a small army to start with.

My favorite force would be the Eldar battleforce. I run Ulthwe and can always use more Guardians and Wave Serpents.

I may be wrong, but the TAU one looks good. Fire warriors form the core of your army, battle suits are a must, plus one can be used as you Commander, stealth teams used to be good (not sure on new ones) and pirahna can;t be a bad choice.

I know you said xenos, but Space wolves have a pretty cool battle force, people often knock wolf scouts, but they are effectively free! (and could be added to you DA army if you wanted)

The eldar one was much better when it had the walker, but if Viper Jetbikes are good, then it is also pretty solid. (2 is probaby batter than 1 becuase you want a 10 man Avenger squad.

Necrons are good value, but afer more than one you probably have enough warriors and scarabs. The cron force is a perfect starting point though.

Orks are all great and usefull bits, but you don't get as many points or as big savings as other battle forces, however it is one of the cheapest and eveything you get will always have a use in an ork army. you can never have too many boyz in tucks, or too many bikes.

IMO CSM is one of the worst as Possessed are pretty useless, but i guess thats fine becuase you already have a CSM army.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Actually, orks are a reasonable saving, but not the most competative army these days. Still they are probably the best one to buy over and over and over.

The Marine and Tau battleforces are IMO the best battleforces out there.

If you get the Dark Vengeance set, you can convert most (if not all) of the models into CSM. If you want to run CSM, get that instead of their pissbrick box set.

The other thing I was considering is usually with the boxes their is one unit that is "free" thus the "discount" which box has the unit that is generally sought out for trade/selling purposes. There is always one thing in each box that you can only have so many of.

As far as battleforces go I am baffled by people suggesting Orks or Nids they have pretty horrid BFs. The "best" deoends on what you're looking for so Ive created a top 3 from differeng perspectives they are as follows:

Space Marines: biggest discounted force. But gives an uneven mix that you wouldn't want to build an effective army around.

IG or RW: great building block boxes. Each is essentially a unit in a box.

Tau: Actually a decent starter army. Stealth suits are OK now with plenty of dakka. Crisis are the best they've ever been and you can make one into a command. 12 Firewarriors gives you 2 troops and personally I never take FWs in units of more than 6. Piranhas are amazing now! 16 points for an 11-10-10 fast skimmer with 5 S5 shots? Can't go wrong with that! Plus an array of drones. For be it is the best army in a box.

From the sounds of it, and I could be wrong it sounds like you just started with Dark Vengeance as a box set, and now you want to start an actual army for 40k....

Why not go with Chaos or SM if not Dark Angels for now?

You're pretty close to a 1k force with either one as it is so to build up would be more cost effective..

If thats not appealing to you what kind of army do you want to have? Do you like painting or no? Do you want a lot of vehicles and or monsters or lots of infantry? Your question is not specific enough to get a good answer... which is why I was laughing to see different BF's being pitched throughout the thread... we need you criteria first!

It really depends on what kind of army you are looking to run. With what you have I would say that the SM Battleforce is probably your best bet because you already have some Dark Angels (which are just a chapter of Space Marines).

There's no kill like overkill.

I have 3 sets of dark vengeance. Right now I have about 7-8k points of dark angels and about 3k of chaos. I was asking about a 3rd army and just in general.

Ork battleforce, is great. get two of those, two more boxes of boys and two boxes of lootas. Turn one of the bikes in to a warboss and you now have a pretty decent army. You may need another trukk also.

Count is off the Piranha with drones still on is 8 s5 shots (4 at BS3, 4 twinlinked at bs2), and it is 40 stock. When you toss the drones off it gets an effective cost of 16pts.

I'd also add my support for orks. You get bikes, which you can run as nob bikes, which are great. You get boyz, and you're always going to need more boyz. You get a trukk, which isn't worthless by itself, but, more importantly gives you 80% of a battlewagon with some more bitz and a generous helping of creativity.

Really, nothing goes to waste in the current ork battleforce.
