Two pieces of advice:

When taking a close-up of your thumb(nails), make sure they're clean / look alright.

You might be getting into legal trouble here with GW / New Line Cinema.

Otherwise: the model looks good, nice piece of work.

Looks good!

Is this the same Knights Models who bought us the Batman game?

If so, is there going to be a LOTR skirmish game?

Cause if there is, just take my money now!

They already have a 70mm line of LOTR stuff, so I assume everything will be above board.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

That said its hard to see GW being happy with another company making models only what 3-5mm bigger in scale?

That would be a GW/NL issue rather than Knights, who I assume are making a line of metal/resin miniatures and not collectables.

Will these be pre-painted OP?

The Batman stuff isn't painted, so I would assume these are the same.

If Knight Models have a license to produce 30mm Tolkien minis and games, good on them. GW can be as unhappy as they like but wouldn't be able to do anything about it other than compete.

Knight models makes great minis. They have a history of partnering with big licenses such as Star Wars and Marvel. They finally got a winner with Batman. Lets hope they do well with Rings.

I wonder if GW dropped the line.

Knight Models were producing Star Wars miniatures at the same time as WotC had their SWM game, and DC and Marvel characters at the same time as Heroclix was going strong...

Different licences for the same product - one for gaming miniatures, and one for non-gaming figurines, most likely.

Its possible there is rules. I seem to remember reading something somewhere about licenses for different scales being seperate, so KM could produce 30mm and GW 28mm line both with different rulesets as thats what they were allowed to do under the license agreement. If GW prodcued an official 30mm Gandalf, then that'd be a nono.

Dunno if thats complete balls or not, but I def remember reading somthing along those lines.

That Gandalf looks insanely good, but KM minis are always so expensive... I only have 3 or 4 Star Wars models (30mm).

By looking at the miniature it seems to be based on Ian McKellen, so I guess the license is with the movie producers and not with the Tolkien family. I wonder if there is a chance of seeing less popular stuff like characters from the Silmarillion with original designs.

I think GW's LOTR models are so lackluster... so this really interests me!

Well... me too! The only miniatures by GW that I really like in the new line of The Hobbit are the plastic eagles. And they are just eagles, a very generic concept. The other characters are a bit meh. I like better some older LOTR minis like the Fellowship than the current releases. Well, Bolg is pretty badass, but 20€...

I hope to see some cool Aragorn, Boromir, maybe even Glorfindel?

Exactly, and given GW's prices, the Knight models might not be so bad cost-wise.

Is it wrong that I'm slightly delighted that the only possible outcome of them getting upset would be they'd be told to go feth themselves?

Or do we think they'll start legal action claiming that they thought up miniatures for LOTR first and try and sue New Line, Knight Models and anyone else they can think of?

It's also possible that LOTR sales from GW are not hitting a level in the contract necessary to maintain exclusivity. None of us have seen the contract and we don't know what's in it.

I like what I see but I find their site a bit confusing for me because their models are painted in such a painterly way its hard to tell if its an artist impression or a model. As for competition with the GW miniatures line New Line have given licences for duplicate items to other companies. For example there are two companies that make steel replica swords (United Cutlery and The Noble Collection) as well as Weta themselves making super deluxe versions. So I'm not surprised at there being two companies making miniatures. Knightmodels seem to be at the more expensive end of the market and they may have a contract that says they can only market figures x months after the film is released so that GW get first bite of the market. That said, GW have been very touch and go with the miniatures they have released. Azog is a fantastic sculpt but the two finecast Bilbo figures seem very poor by comparison.

HAHAHA! You go Knight Models! This is extremely humorous. Better-looking, higher quality miniatures that appeal to virtually the exact same market. Nice.

I really hope GW tries to complain about it. Alan Merrett needs someone to tell him to go feth himself. Compared to New Line, GW is the small potatoes. Plus, it would also be humorously awesome if GW's 'we don't make toys' crap came back to bite them on the tookus here.

But really,

I'm just happy for some decent LOTR minis! I doubt these will really hurt GW, as hobbyists experienced enough to find and order these from abroad already were steering well clear of their Hobbit release (after seeing how they treated the LOTR bubble).

So, collectors will love these, but at the scale they'll be produced at, I doubt it will affect GW's Hobbit releases one way or the other.

Not to mention, I don't think there's anywhere to go but up for GW's Hobbit line... quality and sales-wise. Every FLGS in the area still has a "limited" set with Radagast gathering dust on the shelf...

Note that Knight Models get production right to all their minis - there's no 'let's change a few letters & sell products that are similar to GW for less' here - these are high quality (& expensive) minis. GW will know of this company & the fact they're legit & therefore can't touch them.

I got a couple of the Iron Man 54mm minis - great models & come in really nice packaging. I agree with a previsous poster that their painter is too awesome & can be off-putting when you have the mini in front of you then look at their paint-job & you know inside you can never match it & therefore put it back in the box tehnput that on a shelf!

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

But I thought GW makes the "highest quality" miniatures...

Seriously, Knight Models makes some really, really nice stuff.
