After discovering the Warhammer 40k universe and reading through the lore on the 40k wiki, Lexicanum, and 1d4chan, I finally decided to delve into the game itself. I found a FLGS with a regular player group and really helpful staff, and got hooked when I played a demo game. My roommate has even started with me!
I don't own any models yet, but I'm going to play Eldar, because I find their look and background really cool. I might eventually branch out into Dark Eldar and Tau, my 2nd and 3rd favorites respectively, when I get the money.
Hopefully I'll be able to post an initial army list soon!

Good going, grab yourself/download a codex before you get going, i feel if i was starting from scratch it would be the first thing id do and i think a lot of people skip doing, buy models, kit them out, then realize they aren't legal/what they want. So that would be my personal opinion.

Thanks for the responses!
Don't worry; getting the rulebook and Codex: Eldar were the first things I did. My friend bought Dark Vengeance for the Dark Angels (what he wants to play), so we plan on assembling and painting the Chaos troops as practice. I don't plan on getting any models until I have an army list finalized.
