So, me and my old man wanted to get into Warmachine, I thought it might be better for him than 40k with how much cheaper/compact the game is.

Does anybody know yet how good the Convergence are? I really like the way they look, how should I expand past the battle box thingy with a warcaster and jacks?

Convergence look to be a pretty solid faction. As they are extremely new and not even close to being fully released yet most people have no idea how they are going to stack up.

One thing that helps to know is that this isnt 40k every faction is competitive, it relies heavily on player ability.

They look like they'll do OK, but being so new and with much of their Faction Book stuff still unreleased it's difficult to say. Army building will be quite a bit more restricted than the other armies of course, just because there are a lot fewer options than the main factions.

The thing you have to know, however, is that the plastic Battlebox and Jack kits for Convergance are apparently very very complex - I had a friend who bought one, and it's got so many more fiddly bits (which also require extra flash cleaning) than the basic battle boxes. Just a heads up in case you wanted an easier faction to assemble

I can't say for sure about expanding (haven't read the Convergance stuff through yet), but getting an extra Heavy Jack kit and their Opitfex Directive unit (a jack Buffing unit) and some Servitors might be a good start. You'd probably also need a unit of some sort, but I'm really not sure about which ones would make good front line infantry.

Hope that helps a little anyway

START WITH SMALL GAMES. when you get to 25-35 points, people thend to bring these crazy combos that overwhelm you when you are just trying to learn the basics. get a friend and have him set of a couple of 15 pointers or Battlebox games. Start your own mini journeymen league

Convergence are pretty solid and have a nifty thing going with being able to trickle down focus. Their only downside right now (because they're the newest faction) is that their only really good build is Syntherion (battle box caster) running 7 'jacks and accompanied by atonement servitors.

Can't offer much advice on Convergence but I'll echo what others have said, start small and get a journeyman league going check local game stores and see if there is a player base that might be interested. As far as cheaper.... it is less expensive to start but the GW games usually will have lets say 4 troop choices for each army and 2 of them will suck so you get the 2 buy 3-4 boxes of each at $25-$45 each and call it good. My skorne for example I have spend $50 on nihilators, $50 on incindiarii, $50 on slingers, $50 gator posse and am now looking at Arcuarii, Cetrati, and Swordsman and eventually Reivers all at $50-70 for full units, it's good to have a variety because some are more effective under others. For example Nihilators and Swordsmen fill similar rolls of a melee unit there are slight difference however since a warlock or warcaster plays a big roll in how your army works and synergy, Nihilators may perform better under Naaresh, Rasheth and Morg where Swordsmen are better for Makeda(s) and Zaal (more souls). But I am shooting for 3-4 50 point lists, if you wanted to keep it on the cheap you could do 25 points games very inexpensively if you just want to move some models and roll some dice, the 2 player starter sets are very nice for this. The other really nice thing over GW games too are the games are faster IMO, you can have a good time and a good game in 30 minutes or an hour, obviously larger games like 50 would take longer.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Thanks for all the help you guys! Syntherion and 7 jacks? Sounds like my kind of list. How durable are they compared to Khador ones?

They seem to be in the middle of durability. They have less hitboxes and lower armor.

Syntherion's 'jack marshal ability actually causes any warjacks in his battle group to self repair (d3) every turn. So unless he goes all out, you jack will start healing itself.

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

They also have the only warjack with Weapon Master!

And frankly, everything looks weak and piddly next to Khador jacks. Overall, Cyriss is fairly average, but they have a TON of repair options. Including the only jack in the game that can repair other jacks.

I just got back from game night, grabbed a battle box and rulebook + convergence book, It seems like Reciprocators & Obstructors would be able to take a hit. Get a unit of those, Syntherion & some heavy jacks along with repair servitors to make a really tanky list.
