i have only actually played a few games with some borrowed mini's from a friend .. and they were larger scale ones with 6 people participating in. more of my friends now are starting to get into it .. and the local game shop has started offering up their room once a month for people to play in ... so i am moving past just painting the stuff to sit on a shelf or for friends ... but i am stuck ... in the few games i have played was with generic space marines and necrons .. both were ok ... but felt to structured to me ...

i prefer to have fun ... over how those felt structured ... ideally i would want dwarfs (but those no longer exsist) ... so now i am debating between Orks or CSM ... or a renegade chapter of SM of some sort ...

i have on hand already ... the SM from the old Battle for Macragge. and another box of SM (10 man team) ... and that is about it ... have about 200$ store credit at a game store to spend ... but can't decide which way to go ...

most of the games i plan on playing would likely be 1 vs 1 with smaller armies (points costs?) till i get more accustomed to the system ... was lost most of the time in those larger games i did get to play...

thanks for the suggestions ... asked around in some local groups and found someone with orks laying around that they did not want much for... so now have a starting group to kick around and see for sure.

If you prefer fun there is only one way to go. I feel like I shouldn't have to spell it out. But is rather clear based on what you are looking between.

If you are still unsure as to what army I am referring to it is
Spoiler:
SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!
Orks

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
Orks always ride in single file to hide their strength and numbers.

what would be a good starting number for them? ... like a few boxes of X ... and a box of Y.

A few boxes of boyz and some lootas is a good start IMO.

I would suggest reading up on the playstyles of each army and between that and the fluff/aesthetics decide which is right for you. Orks are great fun, they are what brought me into 40k. There is pros and cons to them just like any army. Look up how they and others work to see if its something for you. PM me for info on them or Dark Eldar if you would like any beginner's information.

1d4chan comes in useful for this.

There is tactics pages for each army which discusses the style of the armies and what units are good or bad. It's all opinions obviously but it helps to give an idea.

I agree with the 1d4chan advice. Take anything you read there with a grain of salt (just like you would with Dakka Dakka), but there's plenty of good advice there. The tactics overview will give you a feel for how each army plays, and the articles themselves rarely fail to be humorous.

Don't forget to give the boyz shootas as they are much more versatile.

Read the fluff, and look at the models. My Stock advise, is to find that army that you can form a connection with. It doesn't matter if its competitive or not. If you don't pick an army that you can connect with, you won't be happy with it, and will waste a lot of money "army swapping"

I like to say I have two armies: Necrons, and Imperium.....

Well the new SM codex should be out in a week or two. Why not wait and see what people say about it. They might not just be so generic no more.

Since you already have a few SM just wait. How does the DA sound to you? BA or SW? DA just got updated so they will not be updated anytime soon. Same goes for CSM as well.

SW, BA will be updated within the year or two at GW current pace. Orks could be updated next year, so I wouldn't go gun ho on them and buying alot since the new codex can invalidate a lot of what you make.

So what kind of player are you? A shooty or assaulty player? Horde or Elite or a combination of everything? Besides Orks does anything else appeal to you?

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

Orks are affordable, easy to customize, easy to play, a lot of lighthearted fun, and most of all awesome.

AoBR is still at some LGS, you'll need the newer rulebook(unless you join a group that shares one.) but that's 20 boys, 3 copters, nobz, a boss, and with some work, a mega dread, and Meganobz. And conversions are so good and easy.

you can trade off the rest of the Space marines or keep them as a minor army.

If ya can't find AoBR buy em second hand and still save some cash and convert.

thanks for the 1d4 mention, been reading through it when its slow at work.

my LGS is trying to locate an AoBR box from his distro ... found a few online as well that i am watching on ...

from my personality ... i do not care for full structure and organization ... i prefer to wing it so to speak ... and i am starting to lean more to orks .. (maybe Deathskulls?) i honestly prefer goblins over orks though for how the models look and such .. but not sure how an army full of them would do ... may be funny to try at least.

if i did normal space marines it would likely be a renegade chapter so there would be some non conformity in it as well.

So what kind of player are you? A shooty or assaulty player? Horde or Elite or a combination of everything? Besides Orks does anything else appeal to you?

in other games, i prefer to be the damage dealer type ... in rpg games i am always a dwarf or a gnome with tinkering or engineering being a main focus of my character...

in order of appeal (mostly from model looks)

goblins
dwarfs
orks
space marines
chaos space marines
guard
tau

everything else.

I agree that you should come to your conclusion holistically - the fluff you like best, the minis you like best, etc. etc.

If you're going to go orks though (which would be my guess as to which you'd like better given the microscopic amount of information you've given us), then I'd start with two battleforces. The ork battleforce is probably the best one of the lot right now, and two of them will fit right about in what you've got in store credit. That or an ork battleforce, and a few boxes of something else, like a couple of battlewagons, or whatever.

Oh, and get yourself a box of nobz. There's just silly amounts of bitz in them.

i am reading up on more of the fluff / story right now for each of them ... so far the Orks are standing out ... SM or IG seem a bit to structured for my taste .. and not a lot of freedom within them story wise ..
