I am pretty new to warhammer fantasy and I was playing a game with my friend and what ended up happening was that i had my saurus warriors in combat with his phoenix guard and a stegadon on the flank then he charged my stegadon with a flank and after combat we werent really sure how to calculate this, do they all count as one? seperate? which way would they flee?

You always calculate combat resolution by what you have done..using your combat example..
We will have to guess on some things..Lets say you had 16 saurus, 5 wide, full command. fighting 26 elves 5 wide , full command.
and he chargers your flank as you have said with..15 more phoenix guard with full command.
For ease of reference we will say the wounds were minor this round and assume it is the round he just charged
You cause 1 wound he causes 2.
So you will get..
1pt for your wound,
1pt for a banner,
1pt for your stegadon fighting on a flank
2 pts for your 2 ranks after the first.
Total= 5pts combat resolution
Your opponent will get..
2pts for the wounds
1pt for a banner
1pt for the elves on a flank
3pts for the ranks after the first.
1pt for the charge.
Total= 8 points
He wins by 3.
All units in that combat must take a break test with the same modifier. If you fail your test you will run away from the most numerous enemy. In this case the 26 phoenix warriors.

Everyone is a genius, but if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree it will spend its whole life thinking it is stupid.

So for the OP... you calculate them as one. If you flee, and roll more than any pursuers, you turn your unit so that it is facing directly away from the centre of the enemy unit with the most models.

I know this is an older post, but just for clarification. In Peasant's example, would the units in the flanks cause disruption and therefore negate the 'extra rank' points?

Does anyone know if you still run away from the most numerous enemy, even if they aren't pursuing you, a smaller unit is?

In this specific case, neither negates ranks: The first unit of Elves are hit in the flank by a Stegadon, which as a monster lacks the required 2 ranks of 5 to negate; the Stegadon in turn is hit in the flank, but it lacks ranks to be negated in the first place.

Yes, you face away from the most numerous, regardless of who is pursuing.

it's worth noting that physical position at the point of chasing is irrelevant, i.e. if you are charged in the rear by a smaller unit and you flee through that unit, aside from the dangerous test that you would need to do, the dice rolls for pursuit dictate if they caught you not a physical measurement.
so for example you fled 8" and the back of the rear unit is only 4" away after you fled through it, unless their pursuit roll meets 8" or more they do not catch you.
(has this game once where a horde unit had flanked another hordes target (good clash of hordes), the unit didn't flee far enough to clear the width of the horde but the horde didn't catch it due to rolling a double 1, we both had a good chuckle about that)

No, those in combat you ignore, those outside cause dangerous. The only thing that matters is e dice roll

wow - I've been getting that wrong since I started. My mates that taught me originally used to get rules from 7th mixed in, but I thought I had got all of those bad habits out by now. I've lost so many units to that.
