Initially, I'll be slow to update this but rather than make a few more threads about this, I'll just keep it all together. I'm making a Thousand Sons army based on Loki and his army at Ragnarok. There will be quite a bit of conversion, some will be pretty advanced, for me at least. I figure I'll start things off by bouncing some ideas around and asking for feedback.

On its way is a Warhammer Giant, which will be converted for use as Surtur, the fire giant that burns the world and kills Frey. I'll be playing him as a Bloodthirster. I'm open to ideas, but as of yet I've not got any big plans for him. This should be straight forward, but my main dilemma is how to paint him. One is painting his flesh and skin grey like ash, with his long hair and beard painted as fire. The second option is essentially the opposite; paint his hair black, flesh to look like flame somewhat like the Amon Amarth cover below. I also like the third picture below, where mostly he looks like normal-ish tones, just fairly grey. I also plan to paint Chaos symbols and such on him to both fit him in, and as Warp-forged armor. I'm also open to any other ideas for helping him fit the theme better (perhaps I will green stuff some bracers), etc. Here are some of the reference photos I'm using for inspiration. Opinions?

I like the idea or charcoal or even nearly black skin and firey hair. Then you could paint him like lava, mostly black with bright red contrasts. If you paint the chaos symbols like they are gaps in the blakened skin where hot magma shines throuh it would surely look great.
And you could go as far and sculpt small flames on his skin where small eruptions burst through the gaps.

And if you really want to go wild convert him into a real magma giant made from stone like this: http://www.deviantart.com/art/Magma-Monolith-38142781

That's about the way I'm leaning. I'm not so keen on the body as flame look. The other two options I'm hooked. I want people to know he's a fire giant, without going too overboard. I'll probably do ashen skin with flame hair. Maybe a thin wash/glaze of light flesh tone over the grey skin.

Glowing Chaos sigils and such are a great idea, I will certainly do that. I also really like that Magma Monolith and may use some elements, but want to stay true to the Norse theme. Though small flames on his feet and hands would fit, everything he touches bursts to flame.

Hoping the Giant model will soon be on its way!

Got work done on Loki the Deciever himself. Base coated him in Tamiya aluminum for highlights, black:lead belcher for shadows then sprayed him over with blue Ghost Tint. Think I went a bit heavy with the tint and lost some shading but I like how he came out. Still fiddling with his cloak. Not sure what to do with the face on his tabard, paint it fleshy and organic, or something else.

My Giany came and Surtr is coming along. Trying to think of ways to 40k him up. May replace a skull or two with marine helmets, etc. as below I have him crushing and throwing a Space Wolf ( I HATE that head so much, there's a little vengeance in this). May also use a SW storm shield or two for armor/decoration. Green Stuff is almost here then Surtr will have a full head of long hair and a fuller, proper beard. Man this kit has awesome bits! Several goodies for my Nidhögg conversion!

Hollowing out the hand without a rotary tool was easier than I thought. I will have to re sculpt Surtr's thumb though.

Haven't been working too much on my Thousand Sons due to a painting challenge with my Space Wolves. I have been brainstorming.

I have several snap-fit marines from 2nd ed, and was contemplating using them for some of my Thousand Sons. Since they all have the same, unchangeable loadout it would fit. I've obviously never seen Thousand Sons in action, nor have I read much fluff. So, I'm not sure how they move. The mono-pose of the marine models would convey some of the automaton aspect, but are Rubric Marines really so mindless and empty that they'd have little to no individuality or personality? Any advice would be grand!
