Subject: Lance Formation and getting flanked

Quick scenario I got thrown into tonight and no one had an answer.
My lance formation for bretonnians is my general up front center, flanked by 2 paladins. A fairly standard build.
I got flanked on both sides by a ton of stuff. The knight of the realm unit got decimated so in the end I have this:
p = paladin
g = general / lord
[flamers and daemon prince ] p g p [daemonettes]
My paladin on the left had a unit in his flank. My paladin on the right also had a unit in his flank.
There wasnt anything in combat with the general.
This ended up being ruled that my general did nothing, just stood there while my paladins fought off the mobs attacking them.
General could not move because that would break formation/rank.
General couldnt make way because paladins are characters in combat (which would have prevented a hero from fighting instead so not much better).
I couldnt reform because I was told being attacked on both flanks would prevent it.
Was the above all right? If not, how should this have been played?

The situation you describe was all played correctly.
Only thing you could do is declare a challenge with the general and hope someone accepts so at least he gets to attack that.

How did the knights of the realm die?
If any were left in a combat phase the general could've made way, and you could have chosen which unit to fight (making sure you had a KofR in base).
Most people I play field bret knights characters behind full command in lance formation - cowardly i know, but would allow you to choose your opponents better.

Yep, When you were flanked, at the start of combat, your general could have made way to one of the flanks in the 2nd/3rd rank. This is allowed by the BRB.

This is incorrect, unlike all other units where the full command has to be in the front Brets characters have to be in the front rank displacing the command models.

Scenario was the watchtower, which is not kind to bretonnians.
My 3 characters were at the front fighting a unit of plaguebearers inside the tower.
While I was stuck in combat with the plaguebearers, I got flanked and the unit behind got decimated. The plaguebearers were killed to a man on that same round leaving me with the above scenario.
Duel being my only option didnt work out too well. Options were a Daemonette champion who refused or a daemon prince who was going to most likely tear him apart.
Glad to know everything was played out correctly however.
Thanks!

You don't get stuck into combat with a unit in a building. You assault the building, If you lose or they pass their brake test you are nudged back 1". (BRB lg 129, Other outcomes)
Sometimes sacrificing a champion to buffer the attacks is a good idea.

Thanks Artee.
That would have made a huge impact on the game. Having my main lance stuck in the building for all 6 game turns was bad.
Being pushed back would have allowed me to attack other threats as they moved into range. I will know for next time.

Actually, the sequence would be...
You charge and don't wipe him, so you get pushed back 1".
Your opponent takes his turn.
You have to reform, because your front is still aligned on the impassable building.
Your opponent takes his turn.
You are free to charge off in another direction.
Charging into a building is risky, because if you fail, you either waste a turn reforming, or you charge into the building again.
IMO, the best way for brets to clear a building is Dwellers + 2 Trebuchets.
