I am fairly new to WH 40k and was wondering about the space wolves and grey knights. is there any way to form some sort of combination force consisting of units from both chapters? I really like the idea of combining the dirt cheap (for space marine standards) grey hunters with the significantly tougher grey knights and psybolts.

That's covered under allies which has some force chart restrictions and requirements. Page 113 in the rulebook but yes they can ally, they aren't bosom-buddies but able to work together.

okay is there any way around the allies of convenience by making up a back story to my Great Company or no?

If you had some really great fluff and in a friendly game with opponents consent, you might be able to bump up to battle brothers. Tournaments and stuff I don't see it happening since the allies matrix should be set in stone, and the allies matrix is a balancing act in addition to "being fluff" based.

I'll be honest though, Space Wolves and Grey Knights as battle brothers would be kind of a hard sell, Space Wolves don't play nice with the Inquisition and are somewhat humanist towards mortal soldiers and not wanting to waste them. Grey Knights are pretty hardcore when it comes to preventing the fall of the species to Chaos and there would be a lot of conflict.

The Emperor's Gift is a great novel to read if you haven't, that breaks down the relationship of the two and really shows why they fit into the "Allies of Convenience" camp. Kind of like the Space Wolves and Dark Angels, they can work together but there is a lot of bad blood between them.

Nothing to stop you from building up the force if you want to though, I've seen a really nice army recently of a combined Ork and Space Wolf force, sometimes the figuring out the why of the force is as fun as building, painting, and playing.
