Ive had the models forever, and im not a win at all costs player, but there are sooo many units more deserving of the points spent on these guys I cant ever seem to cram them into my lists. Its not as if they have gotten worse over the years, maybe the game is shootier now yes, but they have just been replaced by superior choices. Bike squads and storm talons/land speeders. And elites sternguard for shooty, and say thunderhammer/storm shield for choppy. Mpw complaining because your spoiled for choice is silly, so how instead would you make use of these guys if you had to? Automatically Appended Next Post: You could make an argument for dreads too, but I still see them on the boards, and they are fun to run if nothing else. I haven't seen shooty terminators since probably 3rd edition, and assault marines only in dedicated lists like blood angels.

Raven Guard assault marines seem like they'll be decent (perhaps ally them in).

A good option for one. Personally I hate the ally rules, as I think they allow too much tailoring to defeat your armies weaknesses, and you get tournaments where the top 10 players are all some kind of tau/necron/elder/demons ally formations. I am playing imperial fists myself. I suppose rerolling bolt pistol shots is something.

The key thing with these units is to use them in concert with other elements of your force. Especially if you are DSing them, use them with the second wave of a drop pod assault, to provide more threats and stop the getting cut off. Also, always bear in mind the old saying: Shoot the fighty stuff, fight the shooty stuff. In other words, yours ASM and termies should target the likes of Fire warriors, necron warriors, guard squads ect, stuff they can easily beat without being tarpitted.

Run assault marines with a jump pack chaplain to make them fearless and reroll misses on the charge including hammer of wrath attacks iirc, a full 10 with a PF sgt and an attached chaplain will quickly deal with anything but dedicated CC units which of course should be avoided and can break most units on the charge.

I've had good success with a unit of Assault Marines with my DA force. I run a unit of 5, in a drop pod, with 2 Flamers and a Combi Flamer. Always gets their points back (it's a super cheap unit, with 3 flamer templates in your face).

That's hardly an "assault" squad, that's a special weapon squad that's a FA choice.
Frankly, unless you are using the ASM as either Ravenguard or Blood Angels, you are missing out on some toys. Personally, I'd suggest just allying them in with the Raven Guard CT and just have them painted up as Imperial fists. Use a Librarian and a scout squad, with sniper rifles for the other choices, so they can't possibly take advantage of the IF chapter tactic.

Take the Forge World Ravenguard character & be able to take Assault squads as troops. I just with that they had allowed assault squads to take grav pistols &/or rifles. Wtf can only the sarg take a pistol.
Honestly I'd just try to trade or sell the termies. Or shelve them until 7th ed comes out?

My fear is that ASM are probably best brought from a Drop Pod. The RG CT's don't really have much of an effect if you deepstrike them in within 18". Even if you go with Shrike, he's still going to get you into assault quicker with ASM. And they were so good before?

I loved using shrike and scouts in 5th edition.
Scouts would scout move, regular move, fleet, and then assault vehicles or shooty units. Shrikes unit would hit something tougher. drop pods would come down with tac squads to mop up/support. Was tons of fun.
If you did not have first turn, you would outflank and assault from the side.
New rules killed that army.
<sighs>
Loved it when the GW guy told me the new rules did not invalidate my army.

.Only a fool believes there is such a thing as price gouging. Things have value determined by the creator or merchant. If you don't agree with that value, you are free not to purchase. |

I've still been having success with using Storm Bolter-armed Deathwing blokes. It helps that they're my basic troops, though, and not an elite choice.
You might considering allying with DA and taking a group of shooty Deathwing as troops (using the normal SM termies for models). Making them scoring can have a big difference. Instead of having to drop them in the enemy's face to make them worth taking you can instead plop them on an objective (in cover) where they will proceed to not die and not run away (thus doing their job). This can free up your other scoring units to take the fight to the enemy.
As for assault marines...I'm not very well-versed in using them effectively. A small group of them can make for an excellent Flamer delivery system. If you want to run them in a more traditional role then you could try to hop from cover to cover and use them to wipe small, shooty units off the board. Or use them as a bullet magnet and charge a big group of 'em right at the enemy (granted there are better units to do these jobs).

I'm afraid the allied DW troops is not possible, the FOC shifts for Belial/Azreal only work if DA are the primary detachment. That said, you can always just take a DA tac squad, a cheap libby for divination, and some DW for elites, as they gain a lot from their slight points increase, as T1 DS and TL firepower is very helpful, and spilt-fire can also be great if you bring a CML/AC and want to still use the TL SB on an infantry unit while hitting something tougher.

Ahhh, darn. I think it worked when allying with the old book. Oh well. Normal termies are fairly good at threatening small fire-support units, weak objective-holders, etc. They can pick off a few guys while advancing up to them.

I'd like to point out that 5 assault marinse with 2 flamers and a drop pod is 95 points. That's sufficiently good to clear back field objectives. Flame like crazy and able to put a little fight into CC
