Hey peeps. Been reading up and trying to organize a start squad for my life in 40k to begin with.
I've never really played other than box missions in DV game and just fancied passing this by here and see what feedback i get.

HQ
Librarian no extras 65 pts

Troops
Scouts 60 pts
(Range group)
+ sniper rifle x5

Tac Squad 112 pts
(Range group)
+3 extra models to boost 25% losses to be 2 marines rather than 1
+1 heavy weapon

Tac Squad 147 pts
(Close combat group)
+3 extra models as above
+1 special weapon
+1 rhino transport

*************** then it gets confusing

I thought i could either take :
Elite
Dreadnaught 115 pts
+ twin linked heavy bolter
+ extra armor

or my first choice was
Elite
Assault Squad 112 pts
+2 flamers
+1 extra model for increase hits

Also i wondered about dropping the either the rhino or some extra models and assault flamers in favour of terminator armor for the Libby and sticking in him with one of the CC teams?

My plan was to get as many legs on the field as possible as ive read many times this is important in the low point games. But i want some eye candy too . I've also tried to balance this mainly against infantry oppositions but giving SOMETHING should there be a tricky rhino or MC knocking about.

Cheers for your pointers as usual guys
Ziff

It is generally hard to critique a list at 500 points. That being said, my advice is you are not taking advantage of being an Imperial Fists army. I would not add in an assault squad or a dreadnought and instead add a devastator squad. I would also drop the scout squad and use those points to increase both of your tactical squads to ten men. Then I would give them a heavy and a special weapon. You do not need any assault oriented units really.

Is it worth keeping the rhino. I only ask as I've bought a load of stuff 2nd hand and thats the only part missing.

Mathematically the best squad sizes and the only ones that make sense are 1, 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, 25, and 29. If you take more or less then those numbers and you are not Fearless or gaining some war gear bonus from having a different number of models, then you are wasting points. Those are the lowest numbers of models needed to increase the number your enemy has to kill in a turn to force leadership tests.

Transports are kind of a waist of points in most 500 point games as most people play on a 4 x 4 table. If you will be playing on a 4 x 6 table then a Rhino may not be a bad idea.

Hi,

I would definitely be maxing out on bolt guns at this point level to make the most of the IF chapter tactics, plus don't forget that you can combat squad them into two squads if wanted.

A transport is not essential on a smaller table, especially if it does not really have any offensive ability.

A Librarian, 2 tactical squads and a devastator squad should be an effective force at 500pts.

Good luck.

Ok working on this principle purely because i have all the models to make this happen now.

1 Librarian terminator 90

1x10 Tac squad 140
1x10 Tac squad 140

1x5 Dev squad 70

So this gives me 440. Now im guessing most 500 pt battles i'll see are mostly infantry orientated, but im also looking at the big picture for expansion. I bought a load 2nd hand and have 1500 point stock value team all together (parts permitting that is) so i dont wanna gear my team great for 500 point battles and then find all my men are running useless weaps for larger battles.

So working on those premises, what do you think is best to field without putting my at a disadvantage later on. I'm still looking at 500pt teams to start with as im still learning rules and playstyle etc.
My first thought was 2xML with the Dev squad for some AoE/Anti tank/MC firepower and then 1x Las in the first Tac team and 1x Flamer in the 2nd for some extra CC power.

Cheers
Ziff

PS i know theres points wasted on Lib terminator armor but its the model that came with the kit, at 1500 im sure it wont matter but not sure if i wanna spend more cash on another hq just yet. I do also have a chaplain with a jump pack a captain and a command squad available as substitues if they would better suit but im worries abouts points value then.
