Hey everyone.

So currently i am reading the Warhammer 40K rulebook. I am already thinking of armies i would like to get. Right now I'm deciding between Tau, Eldar, and Necrons. I can only pick one though as i want to get into Warhammer Fantasy and Warmachine.

Over all i want an army that is more infantry based with a few vehicles. I want different kinds of infantry that work together. The vehicles will be elite ones that are there to compliment the troops. I would prefer a smaller army to a larger one. I also would an army that has some nice synergy. I will admit i don't really know what my tactics/strategy would be in a tabletop game. so i am inferring from my play style with RTS strategy games. You guys can feel free to ask me questions to get a better idea to recommend me an army. I will also extend this to Warhammer Fantasy and Warmachine, as i am uncertain which armies i should use there too.

Thanks guys.

If you want an either infantry based army on the choices you have made I would suggest Blobcrons or gunline Tau..

If you want infantry and a small army I would recommend SM as SM are small, elite, durable, and pack a punch

Really every army has infantry and every army has vehicles that can be considered elite. I'd really just try and decide what kind of tactics you want and then take a look at the armies and figure it out.

On a side note, you might want to repost this down in the 40k boards, the introductions board isn't really a ask in depth questions board

I was thinking gun line Tau with pathfinders and squads of Crisis suits to flank the enemy and set up traps. and then a few hammerheads skimming around the battle field taking out specific targets.

If that's what you want then go for it , it may get a bit bigger than you think though as Tau likes to have plenty of FW (but not as big a green tide though so don't worry about it too much)

All 3 are very good armies.

Really you need to be more specific for what your looking for do you mean small as in number of models or small as in number of points. Also what do you mean by nice synergy.

Eldar have a small model count army that is fairly fun, with 3 wavesperpents (troop transport tanks) 15-16 wraithguard (troops) (5 d-scythes) 2 wraithknights and a couple spirit seers running the iyanden codex

Really it comes down to which army you like most asthetically because if your just starting out your not going to be trying to win every game so your just there to have fun. Also picking the army you like the look of most will help with the hobby aspect of assembly and painting as you will enjoy it move if you like how the models look in the end.

All three armies have very good units and some that aren't so good if your trying to win.

Then its settled, because I also like their look along with their what they stand for and what they believe, to a point. Now what about Fantasy and Warmachine?

Small as in number of units. and synergy as in hammer and anvil tactics, setting up ambushes, along with a units' abilities buff another unit and improve it.

I think that most of the armies that you have said you like there are ones that don't suit the more infantry less vehicles thing that you want.

I think that imperial guard are a great starter army, as you can get a good feel for the game tactically with them, i.e., where to place your artillery, where to hold the line and where to send in the storm troops. I don't think that tau are great to start with because you have to be quite careful not to get them cornered by 'nids, orks, BA or any other faction that excels at close combat, so you have to keep them moving. Sure, IG are pretty fragile in combat, but they have a tank for all occasions so you can prepare for things to get gritty.

The IG is a decent "horde" army, as you have mass blobs of guardsmen and you can decide on whether to go for an offensive game with leman russes and storm troops or defensive with heavy weapons teams and artillery.

Also when you decide to start a new army they can ally with everyone, 'cept for 'nids but no-one else can anyway.

I'm thinking High Elves or Lizardmen. I want one that has elite infantry that work together to pull off tactics. And then have characters that buff the infantry. i'd also say a mix of melee troops and ranged troops.

Tau are a good choice but they really depend on their weapon range, they get destroyed in close combat but they are fun to play against, and the models look cool.
But I do agree with above post. Guard are great bc you have so many options with what you can do... And the leman Russ tank has so many options for ripping your opponent into a thousand tiny pieces haha

Then I would probably go high elves if you are set on them, as they have a good mix of magic, combat and range. the units are a bit expensive but quite powerful, and they are fun to play. Dark elves would probably be better though, as they have good units, are a good all-round army for playing against everyone and are generally quite fun, with magic, shooting and monsters.
