I am thinking of starting Infinity and I would probably be using an Adriana force (with Caledonians). Will the core rulebook be sufficent or would I need the Human Sphere book as well?

Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

If you want to run the Caledonians as a sectorial list you will need the link team rules in Human Sphere as well as the main rules. If you are just playing a generic Ariadna list with some caledonian units in it you should be fine with just the main rules.

Thanks for that, I have no idea what most of it means but I always appreciate a company that isn't afraid of giving stuff away for free.

Your going to need to read the rules 3 time play a few proxy games, then reread the rules. Only rules not going away for free are the campaign/XP rules, found in Paradiso.

I always prefer to have a hardcopy of rule books, they are easiler to read. I have even bought hardbound rulebooks before when I already owned an electronic copy of the rules.

I've recommended the rule books to many people who don't play and even people who aren't into miniature wargaming. They are really beautiful books to have. That said all the rules are free as linked above and the infinity wiki, accessible through the official website, is an amazing backup resource for any questions and to jump to a section quickly. The wiki is even available as an app on the Google Play store.
I'd suggest downloading the rules and the wiki app and buy the books. The Artbook included, it has no rules but it's my favourite so far, it's all about design and art.
The books are:
Infinity (2nd Edition)
Infinity - Human Sphere
Infinity - Campaign: Paradiso
(New book coming some time next year or maybe 2015 if I remember correctly.)
Artbook One
Each rulebook after the first Infinity Rulebook (2nd Edition) adds some new unit profiles and a few new rules. Like an expansion. It's all available for free though as I say so they don't force you to shell out on all the books just to start playing.
Hope that helps!

Yeah I think most people start with the downloaded rules (quick start, followed by full), a box of starter minis and perhaps a blister or two.
After you have played some games and got an interest in it, the books are then more of a worthwhile investment - as Casey says they are just really nice books in their own right.

Fluff and art, for the most part.
Pardiso however has actual came content that you won't find for free - the campaign system and the spec ops experience system, IIRC.

Thanks, I enjoyed the art book (because the exclusive mini drew me in), so it seems like a worthwhile investment.
Does anyone know the actual name of the app in Google Play? I was trying to find it earlier, but looking for "Infinity" didn't really help.

I think it's just Infinity Wiki but it should be on the first page if you search for 'infinity the game'. You'll also find Aleph Toolbox on the Playstore which is a free army builder which will help you put army lists together. If you find one the other will be at the bottom of the page under 'people who downloaded this also downloaded...'.

This is why most people get the rulebooks. Fluff and art.
The rules/army lists part is the freebie. If you want the soft fluffy stuff, you need the books.

Is it harder to get hold of the Human Sphere book than the others? One of my friend's has a FLGS and he's looking at picking up Infinity, but there are only the Core Rulebook and Paradiso on the distributor's list - Corvus Belli also seem to be out of stock too.

The Human Sphere army lists that I downloaded seem to be incomplete/strange.
What exactly is allowed in a sectoral army? The Ariadna entry contains French, Scottish and Cossack elements for example but nothing obvious to distinguish them, it is also missing the Galwegians. Some of the units are also missing stats and abilities (the SAS).

The lists are distributed in separated PDFs that contain exactly the material that each book features. That means that if you have only downloaded the HS army lists you won't get the full army lists but only the units that were added for each in that expansion.
In order to get the full lists you must download the Rulebook army lists, the HS army lists and the Campaign Paradiso army lists. Same happens with the rules.
Also I think the full sectorial lists should be at the end of the Campaign Paradiso Army list PDF document. However, sectorial armies should be the last thing to worry about. A new player shouldn't bother in limiting his/her available options and learning about a complex rule (Linked Teams: Fire Teams) that requires the player to have a solid grasp of the full rules first, despite how appealing is the more homogeneous look of themed subforces.

You can learn a lot with the online army generator and the infinity wiki. Me and a mate had our first proper games last weekend. We just jumped in straight off the bat with link teams, AD troops, hackers and all. It made the first game pretty slow, but by game four we'd already gained a pretty good idea for how most things worked and what we wanted to do next time.
I downloaded the army lists and I would agree that they are not complete. We just used the downloads ruleset + human sphere - ruleset and then used the online army generator for everything to do with list building. The options for the sectorial armies are also on the army generator.

Some of the units are also missing stats and abilities (the SAS). The units missing stats are just newer options for the same units in the other books. The main profile with all stats is already printed in the 2nd editiion rules lists. It's basically intended as an extra line in that original box. In the same way as you would have (in the original list): HI VETERAN KAZAKS ISC: Veteran Kazaks ELITE TROOPS MOV CC BS PH WIP ARM BTS W AVA 4--4 15 13 13 13 4 0 1 2 Regular Not Impetuous No Cube Shock Immunity Veteran (V: No Wound Incapacitation, Sixth Sense L2) (ALL Vet kazaks have these in common.) Followed by the unit option types: VETERAN KAZAK ( CH: Mimetism) AP Rifle and Light Flamethrower Pistol, CCW 0 47 VETERAN KAZAK ( CH: Mimetism) AP HMG and Light Flamethrower Pistol, CCW 2 61 VETERAN KAZAK (Multispectral Visor L1) AP Rifle and Light Flamethrower Pistol, CCW 0 47 VETERAN KAZAK Doctor AP Rifle and Light Flamethrower Pistol, CCW 0 48 VETERAN KAZAK Lieutenant ( CH: Mimetism) AP Rifle and Light Flamethrower Pistol, CCW 0 41 VETERAN KAZAK Lieutenant ( CH: Mimetism) AP HMG and Light Flamethrower Pistol, CCW 1 61 In the HS lists, you get this entry under "Veteran Kazak". No stats, no AVA. No skills unless they have additional ones not in the original list (the way the ones above with " CH:Mimetism" are shown. If they do another new VK unit with "Climbing plus" it would be in an option like HI VETERAN KAZAKS ISC: Veteran Kazaks ELITE TROOPS NAME________________BS WEAPONS _______________CC WEAPONS SWC C VETERAN KAZAK (climbing plus) T2 Rifle, Light Flamethrower Pistol, CCW __SWC: 0 Cost: xx It's just another unit option like the VK doctor or Lt, or AP rifle as opposed to APHMG. Automatically Appended Next Post: If 40k used the system that Infinity does, then SM would be listed by weapon type - not by base cost +xpts for weapon upgrade.
You would have stuff like :
Tactical Marine squad.
[insert stats here]
Space marine Bolter, bolt pistol, knife 15pts. SWC 0 AVA total
Space marine Plasma gun, bolt pistol, knife 21pts SWC1
etc.
When they brought out new units in a newer codex (and the codex didn't automatically neuter older units)
Instead of having them do an entirely new tactical squad entry duplicating everything that didn't change, you would only get:
Tactical Squad:
Space marine Gravito-spatial-wormhole cannon, bolt pistol 79 SWC4
