Unhealthy Competition With Other Legions

Filipstad, Sweden.

So I recently got back into the hobby with a hand full of friends. I havnt done anything tabletop related for about 5 years so I decided to start my endeavors with a new army, IG. So i went out, grabbed the codex and had a look at everything. Ended up with a fluff list of rough, poorly equipped trenchies. So keep in mind that this list is not meant to be competitive. Its meant to have a lot of flavor and be fun to play, both with and against it. Here it is, 1500 points of the Konvarian 247th "Underdogs".

+HQ+

Company Command Squad - 240 pts
Lord Creed
Master of Ordenance
Grenade Launchers x4
Carapace Armor
Medi-Pack

+Troops+

Penal Legion - 80 pts

Penal Legion - 80 pts

Veteran Squad -190 pts
Bastonne
Flamer x2
Heavy Flamer
Grenadiers

Chimera (Dedicated Transport for Vets) - 65 pts
Dozer Blades
Replace Multi-laser with Heavy Bolter

+Fast Attack+

2 Hellhounds - 285
Smoke
Dozer Blade x2

+ Heavy Support+

3 Leman Russ Battle Tanks - 480
Dozer Blade x3

1500 points.

So yeah, not exactly the most competitive list. Im using Penal legion squads to represent the rowdy, poorly equipped trench warfare veterans, I thought it was rather fitting. Alot of flamers and some heavy support and makeshift ordnance in the form of grenade launchers and the MoO. The problem im having however is that my friends play some pretty heavy duty armies. We are a group of 5 players and the others play Tau, Deathwing, Loganwing and Grey Knights. As you could imagine im having some serious problems handling these armies. I've tried swapping out the hellhound variants to both Devil Dogs and Bane Wolfs but it hasn't made much of a difference. I feel like its mostly my fluffy troop choices that are letting me down, they literally get shot to shreds as soon as they peek out of their fox holes. I would really love some criticism on my list to try and handle the aforementioned armies while sacrificing as little of the army's fluff as possible. While I realize that the IG codex' strength lies in its ability to field a huge mechanized monster I have always been more drawn to the footslogger version of the army, it may not have the same effectiveness but I feel like it definitely gives the army more character but a man has to admit defeat at some point. Im at my wits end, so yeah, some ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I'd get rid of the penal legions. I know you like them but I'd go with the a platoon instead.

Alright, I gotta say, always love a fluff list. Always bursting with character! However, I gotta speak out some faults on this list, though I'll take the considerations of your fluff.

First, why would Lord Creed be ordering around some misfit soldiers sent to the battlefield to die? It doesn't fit fluff to well, for the Lord of Cadia would have more important things to do than order around a bunch of criminals. Take him out, and replace him with a normal CCS. Carapace armor and Medi-Packs aren't really needed either. If you worry about protection, stick him in a Chimera.

+Troops+

Penal Legions...I just can't give a thumbs up to them, even for a fluff list. They suck. Bad. I'd suggest switching them out to huge amounts regular Imperial Guardsmen for trench like warfare, or if you want tons of inexperienced bodies to march and die, Conscripts with Chenkov. Not competitive in the least, but imagine the awe of over a hundred models walking down the battlefield, dying in droves, only to restart the march after a turn. The Veterans should be better armed...Melta's or Plasma's (Gotta stand some chance!) and maybe stick them in a Vendetta instead of a Chimera.

+Fast Attack+

2 Hellhounds - 285
Smoke
Dozer Blade x2

I suggest grabbing a Vendetta instead. At least one to transport your troops, and always an awesome Tank Killer. I feel like it's the only worthwhile Fast Attack. Though Hellhounds can be fantastic against Tau.

+ Heavy Support+

3 Leman Russ Battle Tanks - 480
Dozer Blade x3

Ditch the Dozer Blades, waste of points, try instead for Heavy Armor, just in case. I've found it tends to save me from a round of no shooting quite a bit. Another thing, LRBT aren't the best variants ever. Not the worse, not by a long shot. But not the best. But, I do understand you want a typical army. So instead of different (And fluff wise more rare) variants of Leman Russ, try to take some Ordinance? Colossus would soar in awesomeness against Tau, seeing as it takes away their cover save which they love to cling to. And being AP 3 takes away those pesky Space Marine saves. And if you need something stronger, the Medusa can take over at that point. Don't ditch those Armor 14 tanks, but you might want to think about grabbing one or two of these massive guns. Plus, no matter what, all IG armies are supported by artillery, so you're not giving up any fluff for this added (and needed) fire power.

Pretty much my opinions and changes to the list! Always happy to help out another IG player. Shoot well, and may the Emperor protect.

Thanks alot for the help guys! I know its tricky to combine the flavor of this particular fluff army with some real heavy duty good stuff. I'll probably end up remaking the entire list seeing as it is actually quite rubbish but hey it was fun while it lasted!

Thanks alot guys!

Some things to look out for in your new list:

1) In this one, you had 0 serious anti-tank weapons. Battle Cannons are not reliable when facing other tanks. Really ought to have some combination of melta, lascannon, and other forms of high-strength weaponry.

2) A med-kit equipped guardsman cannot also hold a special weapon. He'll be stuck with a lasrifle.

3) Penal Legion are cool, I'm not one to immediately write them off. However, I only really value them for stubborn outflankers or scouts for grabbing objectives in the midfield or in enemy territory. Unless you roll rending, they don't even really compare to an infantry squad with a power axe in melee.

4) Bastonne is very expensive for what he does, considering he costs more than another CCS. When he is in a chimera and can't even issue orders to his own squad, his talents are particularly wasted.

5) As others have said, dozer blades are pretty poor, especially on a long-range tank like a LRBT. There can be a place for them if you can surprise your opponent by moving through cover and presenting your tank in a place they didn't anticipate, but even then risking the dangerous terrain test isn't the end of the world, and I think they're a bit too situational for their cost.

Good luck with your next list

What someone online on the other side of the world that you've never met says should never deter you from taking a unit for being either weak or OP. The community is a great place to come for tactics advice, and there is a lot of very sound opinions and idea out there, but at the end of the day, play the game how you want to... Don't worry about the hordes of Dakka descending on your gaming club to arrest you for taking one heldrake or not using a screamerstar. Knowing the standard opinion (and that's all it is) on what is good/bad and conforming to that opinion religiously are two entirely separate things.
