I've been wanting to experiment with the novamarine paint scheme style- namely the boadly contrasted colors displayed on opposite sides of the model. Clearly masking tape is in order to achieve crisp lines between colors. Are there any other best known practices for painting this theme? I imagine it will be easier to leave the torso, head and legs all separate and painting them individually. Once dry, then gluing them. I think this will allow much more freedom when applying tape. Thoughts? Suggestions or tips from people who have done it? Note: I realize an airbrush would be the best answer, but I don't have one :(

Try also low-tac putty - much easier to fit around odd shapes and contours than tape. You can also use colour shapers or other tools to get a nice even/straight divide at the edge.

My marines are half and half (grey and yellow) and I just painted the centre line (painting the lighter colour first so any over paint could be covered up with the darker colour) - it looks good enough at tabletop level and if you are careful you can get it looking good at a closer view as well.

I'll have to look into that, Thanks!

If you're only doing basecoating work you can probably find a simple airbrush for about £8.

The problem is you then either need air cans (which are the crappest way of airbrushing anything ever), or a compressor (a kit with a tank and two airbrushes I recently saw for about £60).

"An airbrush" doesn't work on its own
