I have a Stormraven coming in about a week to fill out my Salamanders.

I have a few questions about everyone's experience with them:
- I bought it mainly as an afterthought just to challenge my increasing local flier-based meta-game.
- I have a Stormtalon already. So I was thinking about using the escort craft USR to bring them on simultaneously.

++ Do you think this is an OK plan?

++ After they come on, do they follow squadron rules (ie can one take a hit for the other like a "unit")?

++ I wasn't planning on using it as a transport because I think it will get shot out of the sky and then everyone in it will die. Is this short sighted or poorly utilizing it?

++ Did I waste my money / points by buying these two birds instead of two of the anti-aircaft C:SM tanks?

Thanks folks.

It's a good idea, but why on earth would you think they would use the squadron rules?

Run it empty as a gunboat.

Escort should help with interceptor fire.

Stormravens should basically never be run with stuff inside unless its 100% disposable.

If the Stormraven gets shot down, they're all taking str10 ap2 hits. Only a unit of TH/SS terminators could hope to survive that, and they'll still get mauled.

Its more than worth its points as a gunship.

And yeah, your idea of escorting it with the Talon is a good one. You ensure they both come on at the same time that way.

Here's (vaguely) related question.

Do people read the Skies Of ________ rule the same as me? That is, because they are placed "as if they were deep striking" that they would benefit from locator beacons or anything else that reduces DS scatter?

That would make me more inclined to use them as transports, as that would give slightly more flexibility, reduced danger and it would prevent the unit on board from counting towards the reserve limit.

That is correct. Locator beacons would work.

Teliport Homers would not however as they only work on things using Teliportation to Deep Strike.

Not sure about the beacons.

But instead of an empty Stormraven I'd run two or three Stormtalons for AA.

Cool, so my plan for a fluffy RG list, where scouts with beacons infiltrate forwards, then SR fly in and drop nasties on their location will work!

Only scout bikers and drop pods get locator beacon the rest is all teleport homer...
I just realised that the stormraven has acces to it too...
If a stormraven equiped with a locator beacon start a turn on the table, would it be able to place a unit on the board witout scatter via sky of fury?

Dang it, you're right about beacons, don't know if that was a comprehension failure on my part or a change in the book, but no matter.

I cannot think of a reason, other than trying to do it on the turn they come from reserve as you mentioned, why it wouldn't work?

Yes. The unit could benefit from the Raven's beacon as long as it started the turn on he table. So the soonest it would happen is turn 3.

Yeah not that great for an assault unit but there is already enough good reason not to do it...For a small scoring unit such as scouts, gives you an ace up your sleeve for last minute scoring(as far as you can say ace about scout).

for some reason grey templar i feel compelled to send you cat treats
