So, my BRB is starting to fall apart. I have been considering getting a digital copy of "the rules" but was wondering if any one knows....

Do the epub versions you can read on andoid have any of the errata? When knew errata is released do the epubs offer a free update?

Do the enhanced ibook versions you can read on ipad have any of the errata? When knew errata is released do the ibooks offer a free update?

Does any one know if there are any plans to release an epub or printed version of things only released as an ibook so far, like the altar of war series?

You can take your big rule book to your local office max and they can rebind it. I had my 5th ed one removed from the binding and spiral bound.

Spiral bounding... how much does that cost because I hate hardcover books more than anything. They look nice but they're impractical and annoying.

The iPad Space Marine codex has already had an update and it was free. I am assuming all of the updates/FAQ will be updated for free until a new one is released.

Thanks, down side is I don't own an ipad :( Games workshop titles are the only think I would use it for.

I'll probably have the BRB rebound and office max into two volumes.

All GW ebooks have free updates for erata for ibooks this is done through the update service with the epub i believe it requires redownloading the file iirc.

I can confirm that the ebook version of C:SM has had the errata updated.
I had to download it myself, and I don't know how long it took to get there, but it's there.

If you already have a digital device I'd recommend getting it on there. It's just easier because the FAQs are incorporated right into the rules, this changes how some of the sentences read.

I need to return some video tapes.

Spiral Bounding at your local print shop will run you about $35. Depends though- prices vary wildly I've found. It's a simple process- they use this heavy duty cutter to cut the old binding away, then another machine to drill holes through the book, and then thread the spiral binding. Should take about half an hour, tops.

The only downside is when they cut the binding away, they cut into the margins of the page a bit, and if they don't pay attention (and what Kinko's 20 year old employee making minimum wage pays that much attention?) when drilling the holes, they can get really close or actually drill holes into the text.

"Opps. Sorry mister. Here's a coupon for 10% off on your next order. That will be $34.95 please," /anger!

About the digital devices- I'm a little irked that I bought the 5th Ed Digital Space Marine codex and have to re-purchase the 6th Codex. I realize it's a different book with new content, but with the prices they are charging, you would think they would throw the digital buyers a bone, eh? Maybe not a free e-book, but what about a discount towards the latest codex, ya know?

The digital books are nice, but they take up a lot of memory, and are slow to load/use. They are also a bit... what's the word? Clunky? The user interface just seems off. Like unless you know exactly what you are looking for, you will have trouble finding it. Moving from section to section is sometimes very difficult- like it's quicker to flip back and forth between the fluff and the stat lines in a paper codex vs. the digital codex. Every rule, wargear, or specific term to Warhammer 40K is hot linked which gets very annoying when you try to flip a page and instead touch one of those terms that takes you to a completely different page within the digital codex. This is nice though when you want to look up with a specific rules or item. Good luck double tapping the page to make the text larger or to look at a model. It'll instead open up a 360 rotating picture of the model that takes forever to load, and you can't do anything to close it until it fully opens. The major failing here, is that they tried to make the digital book look and act like an actual paper book. What I mean is, when you open up the app, you are presented with the cover of the army book which then has an opening animation like a book (after it loads which seems to take forever!). From there, the book is separated into sections, and again, it's difficult to move between sections. Basically, you can't start from page 1 and flip through every page until you reach the end of the book, you have to go back to the table of contents for each section.

What would be nice is if I could arrange the pages they way I want. Like say, I have an army list with only five different units from the codex. Why can't I just create a new section with the army entries for just those five units? That would keep me from flipping back and forth between sections during a game and actually make it useful. You can cut and paste parts into iPages, but anything cut from the codex and pasted into an app comes with a copyright statement and a link to iTunes/iBooks encouraging you to buy the army book.

The digital books are a nice step, but they are a bit away from being the Bees Knees. If I had to make a choice between the digital and paper edition, I'd stick to paper for now. I say that because in an actual game, trying to use the digital book is difficult, clunky, and slower then an actual book. Any why the heck couldn't they have thrown in an army builder or someway to build a list and save it?

FYI, I have a 3rd Generation iPad.

I don't find the digital edition of the codex clunky at all. I like the hyperlinks. I use the search tool to find what I am looking for and go straight to it. The paper alternative? I find my self flipping through the book non stop trying to find some esoteric rule or ability I can't remember. The digital codex is a big step up from that. I actually now wish I had the rule book in digital format too.
