How do you best utilize it? Keep a squad inside to score with them or run it empty as a mobile gun?

depends on the army. in my SW i tag them to long fang squads and add a WG with cyclone. that way i can fire at 3 targets per turn with 1 HS slot. usually stick with HB in that case.

if marines, i use it as a transport for a small squad (preferably with CC potential, sterngard/vets or command. and its that squads h.weapon once they're on the ground. so in that case, i'd give the rb something to deal with armour.

really depends who takes it, and what their job is

I unfortunately don't think there's a compelling reason to take Razorbacks at all anymore. The heavier weapon variants of them are not very efficient now that Hull Points are a thing, and at 55 points for a TLHB Razorback but 40 points for a dual storm bolter Rhino, even the "cheap anti-infantry shooting" angle looks to be better done elsewhere.

Works well for me with 3 Bolter Acolytes in a Razorback with psybolt ammo. Normally they stick back and take late game objectives.

I make bad decisions and think they are good.

The only variant that seems worthwhile is the TL AC, since it has the rate of fire to threaten FMCs and annoying skimmers.

That's fair. I think Codexes with the old Razorback prices can still use them for sure, but ones with the modern Razorback prices are out of luck.

I think people that had good luck with their old non-HB razorbacks will continue to have the same performance from then in the new book. The only variant that got a point increase is the HB version. My assault-cannon Razorback has always done me well, although I am looking at the las-plas version as well.

With IWND for iron hands I believe it is actually worth the points.

^^ not even since it is usualy wiped out quite fast. dedicatting one las shot for destroying the razorback and getting str 4 hits on all the occupants is totaly worth it. And at 55 points..... bite me.

I would only be worth 55 points if it was an assault vehicle.

The TL Heavy Bolter option is way too expensive now, dual Storm Bolter Rhino is close enough for 15 points less.
This means any effective loadout is 75 points for AV11.

The only variant that I can still stand by is the TL-Assault cannon or the TL- heavy flamer. This is only if they have a LR to ride behind.

Here is a thought, the point difference between 5 marines in a Razorback and 10 marines with a heavy weapon is roughly identical.

Would we get better value from an AV11 box or five extra bodies?

Hey, IG have to pay 55 points for the Chimera. The Chimera isn't that great either but you don't see a whole lot of people complaining about it.

Chimeras are pretty great as far as dedicated transports go. Good armour, decent gun/s, high transport capacity, lots of firepoints, and cheap enough to take lots. They don't specialize in anything, but they're about as good a workhorse APC as you can get.

Other than being AV12 on the front, having a better starting weapon, and allowing more people to shoot out the back? (i'm pretty sure more people can shoot out the back, at least)

The Chimera:
AV: 12-10-10
Here's a comparison between the Razorback and Chimera

Armament: Multi-laser (S6, 3 shots for those unfamiliar with it)
Secondary Weapon: Heavy Bolter/Heavy Flamer
Capacity: 12 Models
Fire Points: Six freaking points!
Hull Points: 3
Other: Amphibious (for those games with a lake...)

The Razorback
AV: 11-11-10
Armament: Twin-linked Heavy Bolter
Capacity: 6 Models
Fire Points: None
Hull Points: 3
Other: 1 better BS than the Chimera

I think the Chimera is the superior vehicle hands-down. At the same price as a Razorback it trades 1 BS and 1 point of side AV for a higher-strength main gun, a secondary heavy weapon (the Heavy Flamer in particular can be killer...and the mounting is less-awkward than the Razorback turret I think), 12 AV, and a ton of firing points--if I could take these for my marines I would never use rhinos/razorbacks again! It makes it hard to justify paying the points for a T-L Heavy Bolter-armed Razorback over a Rhino when there's a vehicle out there which greatly outclasses the Razorback for equal points. Kitting one out to be more of a gun platform can get rather pricy, too, and 75+ points when upgraded + the squad that buys it gets pretty steep after a few troops. It seems a better idea to just stick with rhinos and spend the points saved on hardier dedicated fire-support units, rather than paying for a fragile vehicle that's half-transport, half-self-propelled gun.

That being said I do really like razorbacks for some reason and it's still not going to stop me from including at least one in an army...it's just not a great choice to do so.

Razorbacks are naff now that vehicle-hammer is dead. Against MC's there are far better options and it is far preferable to close with the enemy in Rhinos than to have to fire your mediocre guns in order to not have wasted the points spent on them. Which is extremely hard in this edition because of transport nerfs, but I'll get back to that.

As a weapons platform they're ridiculously inefficient. Plus, you're giving away First Blood.

Ok, maybe there's some very limited use with Raven Guard/Khan Scars with heavy flamers/assault cannons, but otherwise I see no point.
