I enjoy playing Warhamer, but I suck, I'm a horrible player, I still have an absolute blast playing though. I'm more into the painting, modeling, and lore of the game, that said I have always wanted to have an Imperial Guard army, lead by a few Space Marines. So I need your advice in two areas.

1. Lore, and background wise, what Chapters have a good relationship with the Imperial Guard? I haven't read every book out there, and I may be missing something, but I believe the Salamanders, and Space Wolves probably have the best relations with the regulars. I was reading the Dark Angel Codex and from what I gather they don't even talk to the people they are helping. That's kind of lame. I also really enjoy the new Sternguard models, as well as the Ultramarine color scheme.

2. Like I said, I'm a horrible player, I need all the help I can get. What allies would best help my Imperial Guardsmen to victory? I'm not good at seeing combos, or working things out on paper, so I always have a horrible time making lists. I think Azrael would be good to throw in a Guardsmen blob to give the a 4++, as well as allowing me to use bikes and terminators as troops. Tigurius can use divination and Biomancy on the IG blob, and reroll to boot. I'm sure there is a lot of stuff I'm missing, I hope those of you that are good at the game can help me figure it out.

3. Imperial Guard seem pretty well rounded, should I stick to a very small allied force just for the purpose of making it thematic, or are there any units that would work well as allies to the Imperial Guard?

I'm sure I won't be able to have my cake and eat it too, but I bet one of you will lead me in the right direction. I appreciate your help, and advice. I hope you guys can turn my losing streak around, and if not at least I'll have a sweet looking army!

Well, there are a lot of big questions here, but to give some answers then fluff-wise,, Salamanders and UM have good relations with human armies, more secretive chapters like DA and Iron Hands less so.

Azreal is really to expensive for that kind of gimmick, I prefer him for 1500+ pure DA lists myself (Also, his FOC changes unfortunately only work on primary detachments, so DW/RW troops is not doable) . Tigurius could be good, but don't overlook the generic libby, he is dirt cheap in DA and C:SM and can provide good support, like divination for the DA and biomacny from SM, as well as the much-valued ASTKNF .Tigurius is nice for reliability, but the cheap options are often better in terms of allies.

As for tactical advice, I'll link you to an article I wrote recently on using SM allies, rather than repeating it all here: http://antorsfinest.blogspot.co.uk/2013/09/space-marines-as-allies.html

Hope that helps.

The worlds of Ultramar chug out IG regiments if needed. There are also novels of Graham Mc Neal to show, how Ultramarines fight along the "mere human". I would gues, an Ultramarine Captain would not waste IG if not possible otherwise. Also, the Salamanders chapter is told to be sympathetic to IG as shown on Armageddon. There are also some quotes in the newest SM codex.
