Hi there. I am wanting to paint my salamanders army and dread to a high level however I can't seem to get the blend right. I'm undercoating with dark angels green then sick green and building up to moot green but my layers are patchy :S

patchy layers sounds like youve thinned it plenty, but perhaps painted with a little too much on the brush? Try dabbnig much of the excess off onto a paper towel and then applying really thin layers gradually. There shouldnt be enough on the brush to allow it to pool in any recesses. This way each layer dries really fast, and can be built up in no time but does involve a fair few more layers (which can gradually recede to give shading)

Ok. I did dry it off on a paper towel and it didn't seem to cover :S

Yeah, it will take a lot more layers this way, but it wont pool up in the recesses, leading to the uneven patchy coat.
Maybe thin it a tad less to reduce the coats required if the colour is so thin its like dirty water.

If it doesn't show the colour transition with the first layer, apply a second, or a third... In fact, the more "invisible" layers, the smoother the gradient will be.

This old blog article taught me how to blend, both dry, and wet. It has a nice description of what to expect when you use many thinned layers as well. It isn't for space marines specifically, but it gets the point across quite well, and has pictures!

i would also recommend looking at learning two brush blending. I'm still learning it myself but from the models I see it on its pretty a pretty nifty way to get your blends looking great.
