So what's everyone think of the new iOS 7? First impressions;

It's very White. I have a feeling that will be annoying since I mostly use it at work in a darkened guard shack at night.

What happened to the weather forecast in the notifications?! I used that all the time and it's gone!

Wallpapers don't work as well now. It forces the image to the screen, so you can't zoom out and make the whole thing visible unless it's got the same proportions as the screen.

Safari seems to randomly crash out. It's done it a few times now. Otherwise the new safari is kind of slick as I get used to it.

Proud user of iOS 4.3. I will keep it that way as long as I can, looking at what I've seen of iOS 7.

Not a fan of the look. Don't like the blur transparency, don't like the new folders. It's too bright and candy coated.

I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually, but it's quite the jarring change from the old look.

Don't have an Apple myself, but I keep hearing only the bad about the "up"grade. Any good sides? Is anyone noticing any improvements beyond "stuff looks shinier"?

Safari runs pretty slick as I get used to it. I think it'll be faster once I'm adjusted. And there's a new control panel option that's nice, though a bit hard to access if you have a case, or at least with my case.

I like it, personally. I had to delete half my apps to make room for it, so now I have fewer ways to waste time on my phone when I could be doing other things.

It's okay. Main thing I dislike so far is the white, no line notepad. I liked the old yellow legal pad look, but I imagine I'll live. The fade in/out on wake up/close down, the zoom into the main page, the new way one closes apps or safari pages, these all have potential.

Basically I'm trying to avoid fearing change for the sake of fearing change. Some of the update features seem neat, some I might put off using, some didn't interest me at all. Like all ios updates, it's a mixed bag and you take the good with the... not necessarily bad, but changes that might not be as great as I liked or wanted at first glance.

Alright, having played with it some more, I like browsing around in Safari. It's smooth and reasonably quick. I still dislike the bright white bars top and bottom, and I wish they only came back with the screen tap, not when scrolling up. The Big problem I'm finding with Safari, and coupled with the tumblr app, is that going back and forth between the two they each have to reload when you go back to them nearly every time and you lose your spot. It really sucks when you're trying to post something from one to the other and I have to write up whatever I'm posting in the notepad first as going into that program won't make them reload.

I found a workaround for the wallpaper issue. You have to edit the picture to have a bunch of empty space around the actual image you want for your background and then zoom in on it.

Found out how to get a limited weather info in the notifications screen again, but no forecast. Sucks because that forecast was pretty much the only way I kept track of upcoming weather.

Only a fanboi could consider that a good thing.

Be warned, slashdot nowadays is only slightly less NSFW than 4chan. There are some interesting comments about the iPhone 4 being slower post upgrade though.

Eh, that kind of thing has happened with pretty much every IOS update though. They scale up some of the bells and whistles, which requires a more powerful processor/more ram/etc, so the current generation usually holds up pretty well, and the older ones struggle more and it often also further crushes an already diminishing battery capacity.

My old 3GS was great with its own ios update, and then the following ones began to wear it down a bit (along with the natural degradation of the battery). I think I snagged the one around the 4, but skipped the one around the 4S.

The 5 I've had for a year is holding up well (though I did have the battery replaced for free a month ago), and hopefully will hold up against the next update, but on a three year contract there's only so much I can expect in terms of future proofing. Or is that a planned obsolescence scheme in action?

Let's be honest, it's probably both.

It'll be interesting to see how things go next year, what with a recent legislative change restricting Canadian cell phone contracts to 2 years maximum. A 64 gig iphone 5 was pretty bloody expensive at 3 years, I can't imagine what an iphone 7 or 6GS or whatever it is will cost when the cap is two years. The two year pricetag on a 5 was... spicy.

Even though I don't have ANY IOS devices, the fact that the NYPD wants me to make an upgrade, would make me think very carefully about doing so.

I am cool with it. We had some worries that upgrading it would cause problems connecting it to our Network and Airplay Network at work. Including concerns about connectivity to our iMacs and use of the Splashtop app (I am a teacher, it is an app to turn your iPad into an interactive whiteboard for the iMac and an HD projector). So far all is good.
