I've been lurking and reading this forum for a couple years now but I never registered until today. I saw a post on Facebook by Alan Welson a.k.a. Daniel Mandelbaum flogging his pirated Black Crusade Studios Warhound Titans. It seems hes taken to spamming other Facebook groups (in this case, A Fansite for Gamesworkshop. I had to regiser to post in the Black Crusade Studios threads, so I might as well introduce myself.

I've been playing for about 11 years now, ever since a friend introduced me to the Lord of the Rings SBG when he got out his Return of the King Edition boxed set (Minas Tirith Warriors and Mordor Orcs) and played a game with me. I played LOTR SBG for 5 years (still do, occasionally) until 2008, when 5th Edition 40K was released and I bought & split an Assault on Black Reach starter set with a friend. He took the Orks, and I took the Space Marines. That was the start of my 3rd Company Raven Guard, which is now at around 3000pts.

Sadly, GW's prices rises are so insane now and have no end in sight, that I've decided I will eventually have to call an end to it and stop expanding my GW collections. I did once have ambitions for new armies (Thousand Sons Space Marines, Imperial Guard, LOTR Dwarves) but now I intend to simply round out my existing armies with a few last purchases (for my Raven Guard; some Vanguard Veterans, a Storm Talon, a Storm Raven or Forgeworld Storm Eagle, a Razorback, a Whirlwind tank and a new Captain which I will call "Edithae"). I certainly won't be expanding my Raven Guard to Apocalypse size.

With GW prices in mind, a year ago I picked up some plastic and metal Anglo Saxon miniatures from Gripping Beast, Wargames Factory and Musketeer Miniatures, and the SAGA rulebooks from Gripping Beast. I'm basing my army on the Bernard Cornwell series "Saxon Stories" using this guy:

as Uhtred of Bebbanburg. (not my model - just a google image for illustration, though I've painted mine to be very similar). I'll also use them to proxy as Rohirrim on occasion, when I play LOTR SBG.

My current WIP project right now though, is a Raven Guard Sternguard squad that I made using the Horus Heresy Legion Recon Squad, swapping out their sniper rifles for Umbra Ferrox boltguns. They're fully assembled and basecoated, ready for painting. When I have the time, I'll post some photos. I'm also painting a squad of the old classic metal Scout Snipers - I absolutely love them. The details, poses and overall character of these guys are way better than the newer plastic models.

Spoiler:
Imagine these guys...

using these boltguns...

Welcome old lurker from a former lurker.

Yes I agree, prices are steep, I dropped about $225 and got a book and a superheavy tank. however, circumstances were that an old Baneblade kit I owned had no hull so it got replaced but I kept it, and this new kit had enough parts to finish that one and build a Stormlord so I technically spent $140 and got 2 models...

Crush your enemies, see them driven before you and to hear the lamentations of the women.

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

Hey there Shadow Captain! Welcome to Dakka!

Would love to see some pics when you've finished your Raven Guard sternguard - those models are pretty darn cool.

Like many, the sheer cost of new minis pushes me towards eBay and some serious bargain hunting. If you don't mind stripping minis, you can pickup some great bargains on da interweb!

If you ever fancy bringing your Raven Guard to a narrative campaign weekend, then checkout Animosity Events for some friendly, fluff-driven crusades against all manner of xenos filth...

All the best,

James

Thankyou all.

I won't be making any progress on them till next week as I'm on a Forklift training course this week. They are however basecoated and the urban style bases painted.

Thanks for helping in the Daniel Mandelbaum department... it's a sad thing that he's scammed so many people.

I posted a Daniel Mandelbaum version of the Ghostbusters theme to cheer everybody up but it was deleted as Spam.

And its a shame DM is so dishonest and untrustworthy. Some of his Sons of Horus conversions are pretty good! (assuming they're actually his and not someone elses work). He appears to be fairly good at conversions (though his painting is gak it seems), so he should just work on an army collection at a time, making unique conversions and interesting basing, then sell them unpainted (a complete and finished army) on Ebay at a markup. But of course hes ran scams on Ebay so noone would (nor should) trust him.

He's burnt all his bridges.
